Cheliya Movie Review

There are some names in film industry which are treated as brands among audience and their names help movie as additional advantage. If their movies are added to the movie it becomes hot cake among trade circles and audience gets in queue for tickets. Maniratnam is one among such brand names for his variant movies. He is now coming with another movie after the successful “Ok Bangaram” starring Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari. As it is made in Tamil as Katru Veliyidai, it is being released into Telugu as “Cheliyaa” under the banner of SVC of Dil Raju. Let’s see how it works on us!

Story

Cheliya Still
Cheliya Still

Varun aka VC is a fighter pilot and is a guy who has no hard feelings for girls such as love and has many stories of him being with the change of girls in his life. He meets Leela (Aditi Rao Hydari) in hospital as he met with an accident during a trip with another girl on hills. They meet again and again and they both fall in love with each other. VC takes her to his home in New Delhi to attend his brother’s marriage and then Leela comes to know about his past relationships and VC asks her to shut her mouth which leads to quarrel between them. How they both meet again? What happens during his brother’s marriage? How he escape from the Pakistani jail? forms the rest of the story.

Cast and Performance

Karthi as Varun is superb and he is too good in his play boyish role and is equally as good as fighter pilot who works for mother India. Aditi Rao Hydari is too good with her expressions and she made the character of Leela lively. RJ Balaji is good in his limited role. All other actors who played the remaining roles are not so familiar to our Telugu audience but they are good to the extent of their roles.

Writing Department

Story of Cheliyaa is simple and good which is weaved around Kargil war. Screenplay is not so well written which makes audience bored and not engaged. Dialogues are well written.

Technical Departments

Songs composed by AR Rahman are nice and are chartbusters already. Maimarupaa song is good is watch on screen. Background score is so good and elevated the scenes whenever necessary. Cinematography by S Ravichandran is fantastic and locales of Srinagar are well captured. Editing by Sreekar Prasad is okay and could have been much better. Production values are apt.

Highlights
Lead actor’s performances
Cinematography by S Ravichandran
Music by AR Rahman

Minus
Screenplay

Verdict
Cheliyaa begins with war sequence featuring Karthi and later he is captured by Pakistani Army. Then it goes into flashback mode with a voiceover of Karthi in a poetic way with pure Telugu. He tells about his love story with Aditi Rao Hydari and happenings between them. There are some interesting conversations between the lead and some are lame and gives no interest to audience. Screenplay is dead slow and somewhere the magic of Maniratnam is missing. Interval comes where Karthi escapes from Pakistani Jail and it doesn’t create any curiosity to watch out for second half. The brand name Mani Ratnam is only thing that makes audience watch second half after the disappointing first half. Second half begins with quarrel between the leads and a patch up. Here comes the best till now in the form of Maimarupaa song which is well shot. Second half is good when compared to first half. Mani Ratnam made this Cheliyaa with his mark poetry written in every frame and scene with the help of high technical values but failed and made as a disappointment fare by none other than Mani Ratnam again.

Cheliyaa Second Trailer
Cheliyaa Second Trailer

As the first part is high on romance and relation between the lead characters and their introductions, the second seemed complete contrary. Started off with a pleasant dialogue, the trailer later went off to an unexpected visual here Karthi was seen in a completely different form. Like Roja, this movie has got shocking twists and turns where the hero might lose his track due to a plane crash. The movie is high in visuals and music until now. But the second trailer hints us that the movie has got surprising elements for audiences. For sure the second trailer has made the buzz doubled for the fans of Mani Ratnam.

Kashmora Movie Review – Watchable Fantasy Horror Of Karthi

Socio fantasy has lot of demand and craze among audience. Whenever a movie with good content comes in this genre, audience never fail to encourage. We have so many movies Yamagola, Magadheera, Yamadonga and a lot which were successful at box office. Karthi, who is familiar with Telugu audience so much with his movies is coming with his second movie in the genre of socio fantasy after Yuganiki Okkadu under the direction of Gokul produced by PVP Cinema and Dream Warrior Pictures co starring Nayanathara which is said to have heavy CG work. This movie is releasing today in Telugu and Tamil. Let’s see how it works on us!!

Story

A still from Kashmora
A still from Kashmora

Kashmora (Karthi) is a fraud who feeds on people’s fear and ignorance in the name of ghosts and dark powers. He makes people believe that he has supernatural powers and plays with their superstitions. He plans the problems and solves them. This is how he plays with people along with his family. One fine day a local politician Dhanakoti sends all the documents and money along with gold and diamonds to his house to put them away from the sight of Income tax officials. Knowing this Kashmora’s family runs away with them and are trapped in a old palace of Rathna Mahadevi (Nayanathara). Why are they trapped there?? How they escape from the palace?? Who is Rathna Mahadevi and what is her story?? forms the rest of the story.

Cast and Performance

Karthi is terrific as Kashmora as well as Raj Nayak, the leading warrior. His performance and body language for both the characters are superb and are to be well appreciated for the hard work he put in to make those characters come alive. Sri Divya is okay in her role. She has a very limited role. Vivek is good as Karthi’s father. Nayanathara who comes in flashback has a very limited role and do not have scope to perform. She is totally wasted. Other artists performed to the extent of their roles.

Writing Department

Kashmora Movie Photos
Kashmora Movie Photos

Story of Kashmora is simple and good. Screenplay is engaging at parts and dialogues are okay as the movie is wholly based on dialogues. Too much Tamil nativity scenes spoiled the magic for Telugu audience.

Technical Departments

Compositions by Santosh Narayan are good but the choice of lyrics for them in Telugu made them bad. Songs are not so good to hear. Santosh Narayan showed his potential in composing background score and elevating scenes. Cinematography by Om Prakash is nice. Visuals look terrific with nice color pattern. Editing by V J Sabu Joseph is good. He could have done better job in maintaining the pace of the film. Action and war sequences are well composed. Production values are super rich.

Highlights

  • Karthi as Kashmora and Raj Nayak
  • Cinematography by Om Prakash
  • Background score by Santosh Narayan

Minus

  • Too much scenes of Tamil nativity
  • Slow pace

Verdict
This movie begins on an interesting note revealing a scene which connects to the main plot and then shifts to the story of fraudulent Kashmora who deceives people and lives on them creating fear and playing with their innocence and superstitions. Scenes written to run this story and slow paced and are full of Tamil nativity which fail to generate laughs among Telugu audience. Audience finds a bit less interested during these scenes and movie becomes interesting with the pre interval scene where Kashmora and his family is terrified by the real dark powers. This scenes works out well showcasing Karthi acting skills and also giving audience a situational humour relief. Second half begins and it fails to continue the interest generated with the pre interval scene and seems dragged till flashback but has some laughter moments. Nayanthara is wasted with a role that do not have any scope for performance. Visual effects are good. To sum up, Kashmora is a watchable fantasy movie for Karthi and visuals despite of its slow pace.

When the film was titled ‘Kashmora’, it was assumed to be a horror film but the theatrical trailer surprised everyone with its visual effects and period backdrop. Now, Karthi has said that ‘Kashmora’ doesn’t cater to one particular genre as it has the elements of fantasy, horror, thriller, periodical and comedy. He added that to cut down the serious theme of the film, makers included enough comedy in the film.

Karthi also said that he has played three roles in the film. The character of Kashmora will be crucial as his character revolves around black magic. He will also be seen Raj Nayak, a warrior king from an era gone 500 years ago. He however refused to divulge details about his third character.

Karthi Talks about Heroines Remunerations

Responding to the concerns of some heroines about the disparity in remuneration of heroes and heroines, Karthi backed the ongoing process and explained that the same practice is being implemented across all sectors maybe except IT.

Karthi On Heroines Remuneration

‘Remuneration of a person is like a stock market ad it keeps fluctuating. Films are marketed based on heroes, so it is not wrong if they are paid higher than heroines. Maybe IT is the only sector where women earn as much as men, but in all other sectors, men pocket high pay,’ Karthi said.

He, however, said that some heroine of this generation are pocketing more than heroes by acting in heroine-centric films.

On the work front, Karthi will be next seen in Kashmora, which is slated for release for Diwali. He is currently shooting for a Mani Ratnam Telugu-Tamil bilingual.
