After Padmaavat, another Bollywood film Manikarnika, which is being directed by Krish, is at the centre of a controversy with Sarva Brahman Mahasabha (SBM) protesting against the film. The organisation admitted that the film distorts history and its leaders will meet Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria over the same. The film which features Kangana Ranaut as the female lead is based on the 19th-century queen of Jhansi, Laxmi Bai.

In a recent media interaction, SBM president Suresh Mishra said, “The film distorts history regarding Laxmi Bai and depicts a love affair between her and a British man. We learnt about it from our friends and acquaintances in various parts of Rajasthan where some scenes of the film are being shot. The film is based on a foreigner’s book and tries to dampen the queen’s reputation.”

But the producer Kamal Jain clarified that the film does not portray anything objectionable about Laxmi Bai. He stated that, “The film shows Rani Laxmibai in a respectful manner. We have taken care about portraying her including consulting historians and scholars in Jhansi. She was a freedom fighter and one of the most respected leaders our country has seen. She is a symbol of valour in our country. The film’s story depicts the same. The film doesn’t portray anything objectionable about her. There is no love affair depicted in the film and there is no distortion of history in anyway.”

An alleged 7-year long, passionate affair between two high profile celebrities with no trail left behind.

No evidence, no paparazzi pictures, no witnesses, not even a memento in possession like a selfie taken at the alleged engagement which is claimed to have happened in Paris in Jan 2014. Nothing that constitutes an exchange or any sort of proof of a romantic relationship.

Yet we want to believe the other party because the rhetoric is -why would a girl lie.

The only so-called proof presented of this alleged “relationship”, was a photoshopped picture in the media. This was immediately exposed, the very next day by friends including my ex-wife.

These questions are not even asked, because we are taught to protect the woman, as we should. I myself have been brought up to think the same way, by my parents and the wonderful women in my life who have been my rock and support system. I’m deeply grateful to them. I will do my best to teach my children the same values of family and dignity. And yes, I will teach them to stand up for women. Always.

There are 3000 one sided mails which either I have sent to myself or the woman in question has sent to me. The Cyber-Crime Dept. can prove or disprove either story, in just a few days. Towards that purpose, I have surrendered all my devices including laptops / phones etc which are still lying with the cyber cell , but the other party has refused to do so. The investigation hasn’t been closed.
This is not, and I repeat, not a lovers spat. I humbly request people to stop labelling it as one and, for a second, try and see it for what it really is.

I have been harassed by this for 4 years and the well meaning and probably necessary social bias toward women has deemed me helpless in defending myself.

Simran came into limelight some months ago, not for its trailer but the controversy about the writing credits. There was a fiasco and it became silent. Just before the release Kangana makes some spicy statements for the media to consume, in Aap Ki Adaalat. Whatever it is, the promotion has been made for the movie. Coming from an award winning director like Hansal Mehta, this movie gains more interest. Did Simran run well in the minds of audience?

Well, the answer is No.

Simran is based on a real life woman bank robber, Sandeep Kaur. Praful Patel aka Simran (KanaganaRanaut) is a divorcee and does a housekeeping job for a living. She stays with her parents in Georgia and has a wish to get a separate house. Her ordinary life gets a twist when she gambles on an unlucky night. This takes away her money and is succeeded by a money crime. The rest of the movie is about her crime journey and the repercussions.

The movie penned by Hansal, ApurvaAsrani and *additional story* by Kangana, falters at so many places with so many distractions and deviations. The movie tries to be a character centric movie at one point, and tries to be a serious thriller at other point of time. Suddenly songs barge in unsolicited. With so many such disturbances in flow, the viewer loses focus. However, one common thing is Kangana. She occupies the frame for most of the film. May be the director Hansal Mehta was too impressed with Kanganas acting skills and wanted her in every frame. May be its Kangana whose additional story made her take the center stage without worrying about the screenplay.The supporting characters look relatively less effective because of the over importance. On top of it, Hansal could not really handle the thriller part of the film. Hansal has a nice grip over the emotional turmoils like the ones he expressed in Shahid and Aligarh, but handling a quirky, thriller and chases seemed not his cup of tea.

Though the movie had some really natural moments, it had an equal share of artificial or typically cinematic moments which contradict the former type.

On the good side, we have Kangana giving a terrific performance yet again. Her Gujarati accent is almost perfect. Her histrionics and silences have reached another level. However at the same time, she should also understand that monopoly within a script will never work. A movie shall be one of the great illustrations of an actor’s capabilities, but shouldn’t be like a branding of the acting skills. Creating situation in the script and inserting scenes in the film just to show the actors talent is not helpful in anyways.

All in all, Simran suffers from a poor writing which loses focus almost everywhere in an attempt to get the best out of Ms. Ranaut.

After all the hue and cry that he raised over one proposed cut in Aligarh, Hansal Mehta has accepted as many as 10 cuts for his film, Simran, thereby leaving his leading lady somewhat less empowered.

Among the cuts “recommended” by the Central Board of Film Certification (read: either take the cuts or lose precious time going to the Tribunal) are the word ‘b***h’ which has been ordered out in six places.

A source close to the film revealed, “Derogating women by gesture or language will never be permissible under any guideline, be it Pahlaj or Prasoon.”

Also out is the ‘b’ word used to describe people of uncertain parentage. A casual reference to the Muslim community has also been censored. But the most interesting cuts are onomatopoeic loud moans during sexual intercourse have been asked to be reduced.

While it is demeaning for any writers name to be pushed after an additional writing credit, I want to bring to your attention that it’s not the ‘credits’ that irk me so much. There is something bigger that I notice, something that I cannot make sense of.

Ms Ranaut has been claiming in several interviews that Hansal Mehta, the director of Simran, approached her with just a one line screenplay of the film. She says that they story was dark & gritty thriller at that stage and that she herself developed it into a light, fun film.

This completely discredits me and my efforts, and I have to call out this lie at the cost of so many of her fans turning against me. Those that know me will know that I have always strived for the truth, and that is more important to me than a hit film.

Hansal sent me a news article of a woman in the US who crossed the line of the law. I loved it and thought it would make a great film. But I didn’t want to do a serious film after Aligarh. As gratifying as the experience of making Aligarh was, it churned my insides out and left me emotionally drained. I saw ‘Simran’ as an opportunity to have some fun. This was 2 years ago!
