Confirming the rumours, an official announcement regarding the upcoming project of Ajay Devgan was made today. Ajay Devgan is planning to team up with Neeraj Pandey for a long time. Finally, the combination is making way on to the celluloid soon. The film is titled Chanakya and Ajay Devgan plays the titular role.

RAID, is probably the title which tells in the most concise way what’s the film is all about, and what to expect from it too. Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta who gave Aamir, No One Killed Jessica and Ghanchakkar. Following the chronology, his quality gradually came down and RAID falls in that pattern too. Probably, it should have had a tagline – the obvious.

Set in Lucknow, the movie is about a detailed RAID led by Amay Patnaik (Ajay Devgn), an Income tax officer who is a “sincere”, “impeccable”, “unfathomable” man with “integrity”. This is Amay’s nth transfer in his career. He gets to know that a certain Tauji has illegal assets, and Amay plans for an Income Tax Raid. Tauji lives in a mansion, a stout businessman with lots of political influence, a joint family and a set of henchmen. There’s Amay’s grit and determination on one side and Tauji’s power play on the other. The whole movie is a clash of words and actions between these two.
The movie is apparently inspired by a true incident in 1981. In those times, the places for hidden assets were bed mattresses, walls and ceilings etc., which we saw umpteen number of timesin the movies that came in 80s and 90s. So, the supposed thrills when these spots are unveiled, don’t give much thrill. In such cases of obviousness, screenplay can be used to make it thrilling, but that doesn’t happen here. The movie definitely gets into a racy mode when the raid begins, but the proceedings get obvious and more obvious as time passes. On top of all these, songs come in between the sparingly interesting scenes.

Ajay Devgn’s character is such a done and dusted role done by himself so many times earlier in all variants from most subtle to most loud, where he stands as a sincere strong-willed office in midst of a corrupt environment filled with crime. There was nothing new he could offer. As expected, he is given a handful of strong punch dialogues to counter Tauji which was played impeccably well by Saurabh Shukla. Mr. Shukla is the best part of the film. However, he gets some dialogues which hampers the strong antagonist character he established till then. Ileana D cruz gets a typical role of wife carrying the carriage. There is an interesting character of Tauji’s mom, played by a 85 year old lady called pushpa joshi who makes her debut with this film.
RAID is good in some parts, but the predictability kills the film. A good screenplay would have helped the film. There is no Raj Kumar Gupta mark in the film, unlike his earlier films where some scenes are thought of so uniquely. The editor also did a mediocre job, and Amit Trivedi’s tracks don’t help the film.
RAID, is a film which is not only sets in 80s but behaves like one. Raj Kumar Gupta’s poorest job indeed.

A week ago, Veena was diagnosed with chest congestion. Water had accumulated in her lungs, and she had to be rushed to a Santa Cruz hospital on Saturday where she is currently recuperating in the ICU.
After he knows the news, Ajay requested his producers to let him fly back to Mumbai to be with his mother. He has been at the hospital since the last two days. Veena had been hospitalized earlier too and only after she was discharged did Ajay fly out to Delhi and from there to Jodhpur for his shoot. Actors becoming directors is not at all a new idea and we have already witnessed many such changes. We have Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor. Abhishek Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn and many more to the list. The fact associated with them is that they haven’t witnessed huge success expect one or two. Ajay Devgn is coming with his second directorial venture in the name of high budget action flick “Shivaay”. He also produced this movie having Reliance Entertainment as co-producers. Already trailers had created required curiosity among audience. It stars Sayyesha Saigal and Erika Kaar as female leads. Let’s see how it works on us as this movie is releasing today into theatres.
Story

Shivaay (Ajay Devgn) is a mountaineer who also guides the tourist showing the mountains having high altitude treks. One one of these guiding session, he happens to meet Olga (Erika Kaar) and falls in love with her. She also happens to fall for him during an avalanche accident. When she is about to return to her place in Bulgaria, she finds that she is pregnant with Shivaay’s child and stays there until the child is born by the pressure of Shivaay and leaves after giving birth to Gaura (Abigail Eames). She finds out about her mother at a later point of time as she was told her mother is dead by Shivaay. Being pressurised by her, Shivaay and Gaura leaves to Bulgaria to find Olga. What happens after arriving in Bulgaria forms the rest of the story.
Cast and Performance
Ajay Devgn is fantastic as Shivaay and he is treat for his fans. He shined in action sequences and tried a lot to emote through his eyes. He is seen in almost each and every scene of the film. Erika Kaar is good but her Hindi is pathetic. Abigail Eames is fine as Gaura. Sayyesha Saigal is good and performed well in her debut film. Vir Das, Girish Karnad are fine. All other are good.

Songs composed by Mithoon are okay except for two songs. Background score is fine and Bolo Har Har song is mainly used a background score more than anyone can expect to have. Cinematography by Aseem Bajaj is fantastic. Visuals he shot of mountains and Bulgaria are breathtaking. Editing by Dharmendra Sharma is bad. He could have done a lot in saving this nearly 3 hours length film. Action sequences are composed fine. Production values are superb.

Ajay Devgn who is back in the form of director with this high budget action movie is waste of time. He focussed more on illogical and Rohit Shetty’s type of action sequences and less on story and its screenplay. Screenplay of the movie is hardly engaging except for the first 15-20 minutes. The number of mountain trekking sequences in this film are more than that of emotional sequences in the film. One of the greatest point of Shivaay is that it has logics which are hard to believe like in the sequence where Ajay Devgn jumps from more than 6000 foot mountain after being shouted by someone for help from below. This film has some good performances but it has no story to tighten those performances. The reason Erika Kaar falling in love with Shivaay is his tattoos, sounds funny right, yes, this movie has all those greatest sequences to entertain audience to the level that they might run away from theatres. To sum up, Shivaay is purely an Ajay Devgn film which has no story but fights for nearly three hours. Go watch if you have extra time to be wasted or if you are an Ajay Devgn fan.
