Arbaaz Khan has been a host of a program named ‘Pinch’ and invited Saif Ali Khan as the guest. As a part of the program, a list of troll & mean tweets on Saif were shown to him. One of the tweets said “This two-bit thug who bought a Padma Shri, named his son Taimur and beat up some people in a restaurant. How the hell did he get a role in Sacred Games? He can hardly act.”

Reacting to this Saif said, “Two-bit thug, I’m not… Bought a Padma Shri is also not possible. It is beyond me to bribe the Indian government. But I thought I don’t want to accept it. There are so many senior actors in the industry who deserved it even more than me, and had not gotten one…and it was very embarrassing. And of course, there are some people who have it, I feel deserve it less than me also. I wanted to give it back. I didn’t want to accept it. My father said to me, ‘I don’t think you are in a position to refuse the Indian government.’ So I said ‘okay’ and I very happily took it”

Love Aaj Kal is one of the biggest hits in Saif Ali Khan’s career. The film released in 2009 and has become a big hit. Imtiaz Ali directed the film and the makers are currently planning a sequel for the film. Saif’s daughter Sara Ali Khan is going to be seen in the leading lady role and Karthik Aryan will be seen as the male lead.

This marks the debut of Akshat Verma, but wait he’s not new. Almost 7 years ago, a movie that got noticed for its sheer madness and publicly advertised cuss words. On top of it, the viral song Bhaag DK Bose needs a place in Bollywood’s history pages. Akshat was the writer of the film and now he yields the megaphone with Kaalakandi starring Saif as the protagonist. You can see some familiar faces from Dlehi Belly in Kaalakandi as well, especially Vijay Raaz and Kunal Roy Kapoor. Kaalakandi is a marathi word that roughly means a situation where things go terribly messy.

This dark comedy is set in Mumbai and in a night. Saif plays a simple manRileen, who has not touched anything bad in his life, but ends up getting a stomach cancer. When it is diagnosed, the doctor advises him to have the time of his life as the cancer is in the last stages. He is obviously disheartened and gets a free advice from his friend that, he should try out a drug and get high, so that he can have just “enjoy” the moments of his life. The drug is called acid and he takes it. Obviously, the situations that follow are quirky and can take things from anywhere to anywhere. Additionally, there are three parallel tracks going in their own mode. One of them is the due of Deepak Dobriyal and Vijay Raaz who belong to the underworld, but as chelas. They aim high and want to be the bosses. One other track is of a couple who is on a verge of a break-up. One another track is Rileen’s friendwho’s a to-be-wed and who’s stuck in his own mess. How all the seemingly unrelated tracks progress and later converge is Kaalakandi.

Saif undoubtedly is one of the best parts of the film. His comic timing is the best in the industry among all the stars and superstars. Yes, even Akshay would come second to Saif. So, when put in a dark comedy, you will see only a hilarious stuff from Saif. Of course, the movie is also supported by some extremely talented people like Vijay Raaz and Mr. Dobriyal. Kunal Roy Kapoor is probably the worst thing that happened to this film. The female actors have done well.

Akshat Verma comes up with a hilarious film. The film as a standalone is funny, but lot of resemblances to Delhi Belly. There’s an underworld, there is sex, there is a silly comedy, people screwing up everywhere. Of course, the number of cuss words are probably same or more in number. It also indicates that Akshat could not think of something else than these common elements. However, leaving the comparisons aside, the movie has lot of funny moments. The screenplay is a bit eccentric, where you are never really allowed to get deep into a story, it keeps juggling which is sometimes annoying, as the switch happens at the wrong moments. The background music goes well with the film.

All in all, a dark comedy which is bizzare and quirky.

After making a flawless film like Airlift starring KhiladiKumaar , Raja Krishna Menon chooses to remake the English film Chef and has Anaadi Said Ali Khan in the lead. While Airlift dealt with humanity, patriotism and war, Chef deals with human emotions. Does this slice of a life film work? Well, almost.

The movie is a part of life of Roshan Kalra (Saif Ali Khan), who leads the cooks in 3 star restaurant. He ends up beating a customer when he comments on the dish. He lands up in jail followed by bail. On a friend’s advice, he travels to Kochi where his son and estranged wife lives. The son’s name is Armaan (SvarKamble) and wife is played by Padma Janakiraman. She is dating Biju (Milind Soman) . The rest of the film is about his bonding with his son, his conversations with the wife, a food truck idea and a road trip too.

Chef is a simple film trying to balance emotion and humor and a bit of sentiment. True to its name and the role of the protagonist, the movie presents some mouthwatering dishes or preparation on the screen. You can just not smell. The movie goes on a smooth flow, sometimes tedious too. Many a scene are predictable and that’s a major drawback of the film. It’s the light-hearted moments that score marks in the film. There is an interesting reference to Saif’s own DilChahtahain when, where he says he has been there with his friends and got robbed.Also, when Roshan meets Biju is also an interesting scene.

Performances wise, everyone have done more than decent job. The film has many unfamiliar faces, yet they brought in a great impact. Be it the leading lady or the child artiste or the ensemble cast, they could cover up for some flaws in screenplay too. His casting in Airlift was also noteworthy.

Saif has always been experimental I the scripts he has chosen. Chef is one such good choice.

The camera seemed to have food fetish and thus could capture the food related stuff very well, along with the non-food scenes. Music by Raghu Dixit is suitable to the film.

Raja Krishna Menon’s earlier work is no doubt superior to Chef in many aspects. However, he also made sure this official remake doesn’t lose its flavor either. His Malayali background probably made him to set a lot of context and content in the mallu world, which anyways seemed convincing. For the same reason, his leading lady could give a strong performance like what Nimrat gave in Airlift
When compared to the original, Chef comes second, but again it has bene made to suit our storytelling and culture too. One watch wouldn’t harm for this feel good tale.

The post reads: ‘Chef, directed by Raja Krishna Menon, produced by T-Series and Abundantia Entertainment starring Saif Ali Khan, south actor Padmapriya and child actor Svar Kamble releases on 6th October 2017.’ The caption was accompanied by a picture of Saif leaning on a stove, perhaps cooking up a potential box office smasher.

Chef is the Hindi remake of the Hollywood production of the same name which starred Jon Favreau, Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. The film was a great hit when it released in 2014 and received lots of love for Jon Favreau’s convincing performance as a Chef. That leaves Saif with big shoes to fill.
