Ranjith and Prithviraj team up again!

Prithviraj is an actor known these days for being very selective in picking the projects he works on, and sure enough he has gained quite a fan following after a variety of movies that show his gravitas and range as an artist. Director Ranjith too is a name trusted by the mass audiences and the critical ones for his pick of subject matter and entertaining albeit visionary takes on them. What happens if we put these two together? Well, movie magic of course!

Ranjith-Prithviraj-Team-Up-again

There are actual precedents of these two artists bringing us something special – Nandanam, and more recently – Indian Rupee. Both movies were commercial and critical successes, and so it is exciting for the fans to hear that they are teaming up once more – this time tackling a historic project!

Yes, it was during the centennial birthday celebrations of K Madhavan, the freedom fighter, that Ranjith revealed the news that his next project will be a bio pic based on Madhavan. K Madhavan is the only man alive who is known to have participated in the Salt Sathyagraha led by Mahathma Gandhi and also the Guruvayoor Sathyagraha, which led to all Hindu castes being allowed into the temples in Kerala.

Ranjith, whilst making his speech in tribute to this legendary man, said he was deeply affected by Madhavan’s autobiography Oru Gandhiyan Communistinte Ormmakal. He then informed everyone present that he had proceeded to give the book to Prithviraj, who upon finishing it, expressed his interest in playing the role.

The veteran filmmaker also said that the movie will be a joint production venture between himself, Prof. Kunjiraman and Madhavan’s own son Ajay Kumar. Further details will be revealed by the end of the week, informed Ranjith to an already intrigued media and fan presence.

So there you have it folks – history meets tinsel town once again in Mollywood.

Jayaram to play Mammootty!

Actor Jayaram whose career graph has seen a noticeable surge in the recent months has taken on yet another project – a film in which he will play Mammootty. But wait a second – he will not be playing the legendary actor Mammootty, but a character named Mammootty. Wonder why the director and writer chose this particular name though..

Malayalam-Hero-Jayaram

Anyway, the film is to be directed by debutant director Benny Joseph, and it has been penned by writer duo Udaya Krishna and Sibi K Thomas. Haneef Mohammad will produce the flick under the banner of Red Rose Creations.

Titled Mailaanji Monchulla Veedu, the film will be set around the lives of Malayali Muslim families and also has young star Asif Ali in a pivotal role.

The filming is most likely to be set in the Palakkad area and will launch as soon as Jayaram is done with his current project, Njangalude Veettile Adhithikal, directed by the veteran film maker Sibi Malayil who is making a comeback in to the industry with this project.

Mailaanji Monchulla Veedu also has actors like Baburaj, Madhu and Saikumar in the supporting cast. The leading lady of the film though is yet to be finalised, and no names being considered have been mentioned yet.

Jayaram is sure back in the big leagues after going through a lull for a few years. He recently has been very active in the Tamil industry as well, with a pivotal role in the much awaited upcoming Kamal Haasan film Uthama Villain.

It was only last week that it was revealed that he has also signed on with director Vikram Prabhu of Mankatha fame for his next project starring Suriya, titled Masss. Jayaram will be, according to sources, playing the villain in this one.

With his son Kalidas too rumoured to be making his entry into the film world as a leading man in director Aashiq Abu’s next film, Jayaram must surely be on cloud nine these days…

Dulquer to star in the next Manirathnam movie?

Dulquer Salman is doing amazingly well these days, to put it mildly. The actor with Bangalore Days behind him now, and a whole slew of interesting films in works with some big names, might just be about to hit the jackpot. It seems he has impressed one legendary director enough – Manirathnam!

Dulquer-Mollywood

Yes, sources say that Manirathnam watched a few of Dulquer’s flicks and appreciates the young star’s acting versatility so much so that he is considering making him the lead in his next movie!

Kollywood and Mollywood fans can never forget the iconic Manirathnam movie of the 90s – Dalapathy – which starred Rajinikanth and Mammootty. The smash hit movie is still what many Tamil fans remember Mammootty for. So will things come a full circle with the filmmaker now working with Mammootty’s son as well?

Dulquer though already had a warm reception in Tamil Nadu with his movie Vaayai Moodi Pesuvom becoming a hit. But a Manirathnam movie will put the young superstar in a different league altogether, to say the least.

Manirathnam’s last movie Kadal had not created the impact everyone had hoped for – among the masses or with the critics – so his next venture is something the people are curious about.

He had announced a big multilingual project with Tamil and Telugu stars but that seems to be getting delayed for various reasons, and it looks like the director has shelved it for the time being. The movie with Dulquer then would be the next one in the works, or so the reports indicate.

Well, if it does become a reality, this one will be something that will have fans across the two states eager to fill the seats at the cinemas. Good days ahead for Dulquer Salman definitely..

Vikram Prabhu’s girl is from Malayalam cinema!

Vikrm Prabhu is beginning to make his mark in the Tamil cinema world now and he is in good demand now that Arima Nambi has been received well, and he has two movies coming up – Vellaikaara Durai and Sigaram Thodu. He has also agreed to be the lead in Thalappakatti, which is a remake of the Malayalam superhit flick Usthaad Hotel.

Keerthi-Suresh

But in addition to all of this, we also learned recently that he will be the lead actor in yet another major one on the horizon, that is director AL Vijay’s next venture. But it remained unknown till now who would be the actress he will be paired with.

Breaking news in that regard then, reports rolling in have confirmed that Keerthi Suresh, the Malayalam actress and daughter of yesteryear actress Menaka and director Suresh Kumar, will be the lucky girl making her debut in Kollywood with this flick.

While Vikram has been having his run of success and good fortune in Tamil, Keerthi too has been faring well in Mollywood. After debuting as a heroine in the film Geethanjali (2012), she recently starred in the successful film Ringmaster with Dileep.

The 22 year old starlet who is currently filming for Darboni in Malayalam, also has plans to make her debut in Telugu soon with director Ramprasad Ragutu’s next flick.
So both young actors will tackle the lead in the AL Vijay movie now.

Vijay is leading a very exciting life now both personally and professionally with his recent marriage to long time love actress Amala Paul, and his last film Saivam being received well critically and commercially.

Wonder how the movie with these young talents will shape up? Whatever it is, it sounds promising.

Jayasurya starved, director stunned!

It is rarely we see such dedication form an actor when it comes to literally doing anything required to inhabit his character well. Chiyaan Vikram has often been known to take extreme physical measures to do his character justice from the perspective of the physical appearance, and now it seems we have another contender in the south – Jayasurya!

Jayasurya-Starved

Yes, it was during the making of the upcoming medical thriller by Madhav Ramadasan that Jayasurya took things to the extreme to fit his character’s bill.

Jayasurya plays a patient in the movie, we do not yet know what the ailment is, but whatever it is it required him to appear frail. While many actors have been known to gain weight for a movie or shed a few kilos the right way with diet and exercise, not many starve themselves for the sake of a role!

And that folks, is exactly what Jaya surya did because the objective was not to look ‘lean’ but to look ‘ill’.

He lost almost 14 kilos of weight for the role and by the end of filming, he was nearly starving himself to maintain the appearance. The director was stunned by this level of dedication and had to literally force the star to go home and recover his health!

Talk about going the extra mile! And the great thing is Jayasurya is not looking for pats on the back for this. No, he definitely is not!

“What I did is nothing compared to the four years the director put into making his vision come true,” says the amazing actor.

Apothecary comes out on August 7th, without much of a promotional campaign or huge marketing tactics to build up hype. The movie and the level of talent and dedication that went in to making it must speak for it itself…

The film stars Suresh Gopi, Jayasurya and Asif Ali in the lead roles. It also has Meera Nandan playing a pivotal role and marks the return of actress Abhirami.
It has been produced by Dr Baby Mathew and Dr George Mathew under the banner of Arambankudiyil Cinemas.

Nisha Agarwal swipes Bhavana’s spot!

Nisha Agarwal, the younger sister of Kajal Agarwal, is definitely here to stick it out in Malayalam cinema.

It was reported a few weeks earlier that she would be making her debut in Mollywood, through the Johnny Antony movie Bhaiyya Bhaiyya, opposite Kunchacko Boban. Now it seems the actress has landed another role in quick succession – the female lead opposite Indrajith in the upcoming comedy entertainer Cousins, to be directed by Vaishakh.

Nisha-Agarwal-Bhavana

That’s not the interesting part though. This part was actually meant to be Bhavana’s, but in the end, the makers of the film decided that since the story takes place at the Kerala – Bangalore border, they needed someone who looked distinctly ‘non – Malayali’.

Well, Bhavana’s loss is Nisha’s gain.

Cousins is based around the characters of four cousins to be played by Kunchacko Boban, Indrajith, Suraj Venjaaramoodu and Jojo George. The stunning young starlet Vedhika will play the female role that has been paired with Kunchacko Boban.

Nedumudi Venu and Kalabhavan Shajon too will play important roles in this flick. The baddie here will be none other than Pradeep Rawat.

Pradeep Illampilly is the cinematographer and Sethu is the man who has penned the script. The production, which will launch on August 10, will have filming based mainly at locations like Athirapally, Kodaikkanal, Pollachi, Bangalore and Kochi.

Looks like more and more lovely young diva’s are trying their luck in Mollywood. Let’s hope this trend lasts a while and it plays out well for them, so that they can continue to grace the screens for the Malayali audiences for the foreseeable future…

Lal Jr will direct Mammootty next!

Lal Jr is definitely going places, and it seems the talented youngster has everything going for him, including the good fortune of starting out at the right time in Mollywood.

Lal-Jr-Mammootty

Yes, a few years ago, the Malayalam film industry was a completely different scene when legends worked on screen and off, and new comers were overshadowed by the big names. But things have changed indeed and now is the right time for up and coming film makers in the industry to shine, and Lal Jr is one of the lucky ones – though good genes do play a certain role, one supposes.

The son of the veteran film maker and actor Lal, is all set to direct Megastar Mammootty next!

This was revealed recently by the proud father himself in a television interview, and so the source is credible. Lal is the lead in his son’s second feature length directorial venture, Hi I’m Tony, which is set to release on July 26th. He also added that he will probably play a pivotal role in the Mammootty starrer too.

Lal Jr didn’t get where he did simply by standing on the shoulders of his beloved and very well respected father though.. no. The youngster graduated from the New York Film Academy and proceeded to pursue his passion by making short films first.

His short film Debt won him a State Award and his other short film Vekkada Vedi was also much appreciated by the viewers.

His feature film debut came in the form of the romantic comedy Honey Bee which turned out to be a commercial success that gained him a solid footing in the industry. The film starred Asif Ali in the lead.

His upcoming flick with his father in the lead – Hi I’m Tony – stars Asif too, along with Mia George, Biju Menon, Lena and Asha Sharath. The posters and the trailer of the flick came out to a tremendously positive response, and it is certainly intriguing. The movie is touted as a nail biting thriller.

Lal Jr seems hell bent oon proving he is not a one trick pony with his diverse projects and let’s hope the Mammootty one will hit the nail right on the head too.

Child artiste targeted by moral critics!!

It seems there’s no end to these displays of overt seemingly self righteous behaviour, especially in the social media, and no lows to which these people will sink to mask whatever personal agendas or issues they have.

Baby-Nayanathara

The new target for the moral critics on the social media pages is the child artiste Baby Nayanthara, the young girl who captured the hearts of the viewers with her indelible performance in Trivandrum Lodge and many other movies including Swarnam, Akasham, Loud Speaker, Poppins etc.

The viciously callous attacks started with the sleazy and completely improper post of her picture in a short dress with the tagline – will she grow up to be like the real Nayantara?

This is borderline unethical behaviour and surely shows something fundamentally wrong with the perception of these self appointed critics and upholders of values. The more disheartening responses and ‘likes’ that the post received would have made any rational and civilized person at the very least cringe at the thought of someone targeting such a young child for whatever agenda.

What is to be gained by this, one is forced to ask? A passing entertainment for those looking for a distraction from the mundane reality of their lives?

Are they forgetting that they are being participants, with full intent or not, to dealing a savage blow to the emotional and social well being of a talented child?

What followed next was nothing short of shameful. One may chalk it up to mob mentality or someone looking for an applause from the malicious crowd, but it happened nonetheless – someone attacked the parents of the young actress for having loose morals and ‘parading’ their daughter in such attires!!

Let’s not forget that all this is for a completely innocent picture of a child in a fashionable garment.

Truly, one wonders where the new age of social media growth is taking us, as under the cover and strength of anonymity, it feels like the worst elements of the human mind are finally being showcased.

Let’s hope this shameful campaign stops soon and Baby Nayanthara and her family are left in peace, giving them the opportunity to raise their daughter in a healthy environment where she can grow to be the talented actress she can be.

Mammootty turns to science!

Yes, Mammootty is soon to try his hand at science journalism as a columnist in a publication. Wondering what we’re talking about? What else – of course we’re talking about a movie!

Mammootty-Science

The megastar’s upcoming movie, which is to be directed by Jamal, former assistant to Joshiy, has him playing a science columnist. The shooting of the movie is set to feature locations like Delhi, Bangalore, Mysore and Kochi. The cast and crew details of this flick hasn’t been revealed yet.

However, there is one piece of rumour flying about that like many of his past flicks, Mammootty will be sporting a very different look for this film.
In any case, this movie would be shot after he finishes up with the movie Varsham to be directed by Ranjith Shankar.

So, as of now, the iconic actor has several movies in the pipeline including Manglish directed by Salam Baapu, Venu’s Munnariyippu and Ajay Vasudev’s Rajadhi Raja, which he is currently filming for.

Not to put a damper on things but Mammukka really needs a hit now as his previous few films sort of fizzled at the box office and left the fans disappointed to say the least. And many of these, inevitably almost, were highly anticipated ones like the Aashiq Abu ‘all style and no substance’ extravaganza Gangster.

Well, it’s not like an actor of his calibre and popularity needs to prove anything anymore, but there’s only so much the star value of any hero can take when there are consistent commercial disasters in their track record.

Let’s hope the movies that are about to come out, which are as diverse as they can be – a suspense thriller, a comedy, a mass entertainer, a drama and the yet uncategorized Jamal one – prove to be the saving grace for the legendary and beloved star.

Hariharan back in the game!

Veteran director Hariharan is definitely back in the game as he is planning two movies back to back starring none other than young superstar Prithviraj and the rising star Nivin Pauly in the lead roles respectively.

Hariharan

The Prithviraj movie is set to launch soon, now that the shooting for the actor’s other flick Sapthamashri Thaskaraha directed by Anil Radhakrishnan Nair has wrapped up. The filming for this one is set to take place in Kozhikkode though the rest of the cast and the details of the plot remain unclear.

Prithviraj is definitely busier than ever – he has multiple movies coming up, which are in varying stages of production and post production. They are Picket 43, Sapthamshri Thaskaraha, Tamaar Padaar, Kaaviya Thalaivan, Ennu Ninte Moideen and another yet untitled one in the works with Rosshan Andrrews.

The Hariharan – Nivin Pauly movie is still in its development stages and the story hasn’t been completely fleshed out as of now. The filming for this one is expected to kick start some time next year.

Hariharan’s last movie Ezhamathe Varavu was a disappointment at the box office and it fizzled when it came to matching the fans’ expectations. The veteran director though is known for his very unique vision and highly ambitious projects.

It is hard for the Mollywood fans to forget the iconic Mammootty starrers Oru Vadakkan Veera Gatha and the epic block buster Pazhassiraja, which stands in a category by itself when it comes to production values.

Now, the fans wait eagerly to see what tricks the director has up his sleeve with these two young and ever so popular stars in the lead roles.

Fazil against new generation movies

Well he’s not so much against the concept of the new generation films in Mollywood as much as the content of them. He feels, he said in a recent interview, that the these movies openly promote anti social activities including the use of harmful substances like drugs and alcohol.

Fazil

Spoken like a true senior member of the industry!

Fazil, of course, like many of his peers is cut from a different cloth when it comes to the art of film making and he has proven time and time again that his vision and and passion for movies work for the mass audiences.

He made iconic movies like Manichithrathazhu and Kaala Paani which won him several laurels and accolades. Manichithrathazhu, in particular, created a record by having successful remakes being made in five different languages – the Tamil one being the Rajinikanth starrer Chandramukhi!

So evidently, he feels cinema should be held to higher standards when it comes to the social messages it conveys.

The legendary director has been inactive for a few years now, and his last few films failed to create an impact commercially.

Now he says he’s ready to get back in the game and a story and script are ready. He is waiting for the upcoming marriage of his son Fahadh to actress Nazriya Nazim on August 21st, and afterwards he plans to launch the film in question.

Fahadh will have a role in the flick, he says, if there is a character that fits him. It would be wonderful indeed for the Malayali film fans to see the father and son working together.

Meanwhile, his younger son Farhaan too is making his entry in to the cinema world, and as a lead star no less, in the upcoming Rajeev Ravi directorial venture Njaan Steve Lopez.

So it seems talent is overflowing and good tidings are in abundance at the Fazil household.

Shwetha Menon’s return to glamour!

Shwetha Menon started off quite young as a sizzle sensation through modelling, and later in movies in multiple industries. Though her return to the industry saw her mainly in roles that had that ‘oomph’ factor the fans really appreciated, she did manage to carve out a niche for herself in character roles that demanded serious performances from her as well.

Shweta-Menon-Glamour

In fact, especially in Malayalam, she did many major and some lead roles, including the likes of Paleri Manikyam and Salt n Pepper, which solidified her fan base. The remake of Rathinirvedam, of course, saw her back in a sensationally sensual avatar but this time, it was backed by her brand and value as a lead star.

Well, now it’s time again it seems that the fans see what they’ve been craving for – Shwetha in a glamorous role that focuses on her immensely popular sensuality, after a few years away from such movies.

Yes the upcoming Girish Kunnumel movie Dhanayathra will see Shwetha back in her comfort zone, and the fans will surely be thrilled. As if that’s not enough, the flick will apparently have her in dual roles!

Though Riyaz Khan will be the male lead of the movie, the entire story is said to be centred around Shwetha and she is the marquee name that’s going to bring in the fans.

In recent years, we’ve seen the lovely actress be in the spotlight for quite a string of senseless controversies, one after another and maybe it’s time she gets back to her roots and get her groove back, so to speak.

So get ready folks, she is back to get your hearts racing again..

Madhupal to direct Mohanlal

Mohanlal is currently in Brazil, where he attended the grand finals of the FIFA World Cup, and will return soon to start working again – this time with Joshiy, on the sets of his upcoming movie Lailaa O Lailaa. But that’s not the one we are talking about here.. it’s the one after that.

Madhupal-Mohanlal

Yes, Mohanlal is reportedly all set to work with actor turned critically acclaimed director Madhupal in his next venture.

This project will take off around September, as soon as Lailaa O Lailaa wraps up. The shooting’s set in Palakkad and rumours are already flying that Mohanlal will be sporting a completely new look for the movie.

The flick was actually announced immediately after Madhupal finished his last acclaimed movie Ozhimuri, but has been delayed so far because of Lalettan’s busy schedule.

Actually, the project could have been delayed even more as Mohanlal was to do Sathyan Anthikkad’s movie after Joshiy’s big one, but that flick is still in development, apparently.

The Madhuapal and Universal Star combination will certainly be one to look forward to as it combines the director’s unique vision with Mohanlal’s effortless acting style. The movie is touted as a full length comedy in fact and this will be a new route for Madhupal as well since his other movies seemed to fall in to the more dramatic categories.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal’s Peruchazhi is all set for its big release and the fans are eagerly waiting to see the star back in action on the big screens.
