It is a well-known fact that Bollywood’s top producer-director Karan Johar bought the remake rights of the film Dear Comrade. Karan took the decision right after watching the film in a special screening at his office, just two days before the release of the movie.

But things changed when the movie got released and received a divided talk from the audience. Finally, it ended up as a commercial failure and incurred losses to the producers. On the flip side, Karan already started looking out for a suitable hero for the film and he has approached Shahid Kapoor.

The Kabir Singh actor has apparently rejected Karan’s offer in a smooth way. We don’t know whether Shahid is not interested in doing another remake now or he is afraid that the film will bomb in the north as well but he said a no. Without having any other choice, Karan is now looking out for another actor.

After a stupendous in Telugu, Sandeep Reddy remakes Arjun Reddy which comes exactly after two years. The movie had set a trend in the Telugu industry in many ways. Be it the Telangana dialect becoming fashionable or the whimsical of a heartbroken hero. It also made the Telugu protagonist Vijay Devarakonda a superstar. Shahid Kapoor has been chosen to play the Hindi counterpart and Kiara Advani plays the female lead.

Story

The film is an out and out love story. Kabir Singh (Shahid Kapoor) is a medicine student who is damn good at his academics but has a rebellious attitude. He instantly falls in love when a junior – Preeti enters their college. Unlike Kabir, Preeti is silent and fragile like a flower. They fall in love deeply and just can’t be separate for a minute. However, after Kabir graduates, it becomes a long-distance relationship, but love grows further. The moment comes when Kabir puts forward the proposal, hell breaks loose as a quarrel sparks when Preeti’s parents oppose it and decide to get her married to some other. Then begins the journey of Kabir Singh’s self-destruction, the contemporary Devdas who is into total intoxication of all forms. Kabir yet is a successful surgeon though he is already consumed alcohol before every surgery. The movie is about what’s the culmination to this love failure.

The best part of the film is that it has been remade by the original director. He knows the soul of the film. He keeps it intact despite the customizations owing to locale change. Though the base of the script is decades old, it’s the contemporary treatment that makes it hit the ball out of the park. Kabir’s physical strength versus mental fragility is beautifully written. That was the beauty of irony. Preeti’s silence speaks tonnes about her life for Kabir. The anger, the sadness, the passion, the suffering has been portrayed to perfection. The only drawback is its slow pace in the second half.

The music captures the soul of this intense love story. Bekhayali and Kitna Chahe are extraordinary and the other songs weave with the situation seamlessly. Despite the liplocks, this film doesn’t present like any other Bollywood sleazy songs. The love feels pure and the lovers high on each other.

Performances

The performances are top notch. This is Shahid Kapoor’s one of the best acts for sure. On par with Haider and Udta Punjab, Shahid meets the expectations or probably even more. Kiara also makes an impact. Her screen presence is soothing. The supporting cast also did a suitable job, especially the friend of Kabir stood out.

Technical Aspects

Kabir Singh’s screenplay is worth mentioning for his subtle yet strong scenes. Some scenes make you cheer, make you cry and make you laugh too. Cinematography is decent too.

Verdict

The movie’s soul definitely connects to the young and old who are/were in love, whether won or lost. It’s refreshing to see an out-and-out love story in Bollywood after ages when Bollywood totally forgot about writing scripts about the universal subject – college love.

However, the reporter was not satisfied with the answer and kept pestering Kiara with the same question. Shahid lost his cool and took a dig at him.

“It looks like you haven’t had a girlfriend in a while. I said if you want to see the kissing scenes, you should pay. I never said that you will have to pay only for that. Why do you have to keep asking about kissing scenes?” Asked Shahid in anger.

It is already known that Telugu cult film Arjun Reddy is remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh with Shahid Kapoor as the lead. The Udta Punjab actor is known for his intense performances and he seemed like a perfect fit for the role. Even the teaser proved the same and increased the expectations on the film.

Shahid has worked very hard for the film. Being a non-smoker, he smoked around 20 cigarettes a day to get into the character. He also used to borrow clothes from the students in Delhi as the role in this film, to get the unpolished look of the protagonist right. He used to spend a lot of time with students to learn about their mindsets.

Story

Shree Narayan Singh, after the success of Toilet Ek Prem Katha , comes up with another small town based issue film Batti Gul Meter Chalu. It was in fact one of the top 5 grossing movies in 2017. The director and the writer team Siddhart-Garima repeat their combination for one another issue tats needs to be brought into light. The bloated electricity bills and the power supply in small towns. Could the director repeat his magic?. Well, No.

Set in Tehri in Uttarakhand, the movie starts off with a story of three friends who mutually love each other.
Sushil Kumar Pant aka SK (Shahid Kapoor) is a streetsmart lawyer who makes money blackmailing the local bigshots.
Sundar Mohan Tripathi (Divyendu) is a straight forward man with dreams of achieving heights in his business which is start-up.
Lalitha Nautiyal aka Nauti (Shraddha Kapoor) is an aspiring fashion designer with gawdy work.

Both Sundar and SK love Nauti and things turn a bit ugly when she has to choose one among them. On the other side, Sundar’s is suddenly socked with a bill illegally sent by the elecricity corporation witha warnning that if not paid the business shall be seized and the house too. This puts the seedha saadha Sundar into panic and pain. He jumps into the river. SK becomes the hero from a con. He determines to take revenge on the corporation and the second half is more of a court drama, where he argues with a lawyer hired by the corporation. The role is played by Yami Gautam. The rest of the film is obviously how good won over the evil.

Well, no doubt the writers had great intentions like their first. Also, they follow a similar pattern of embedding humour and sound tracks popping in, on and off. However, the script spends time on the love story which is not in sync or relevance to the film. The aspect seems forced, nor the main pair had the charm. The actual movie starts off only in the second half during the debates. There are long lines which thrive to make an impact. Sometimes it did and sometimes it didn’t. The humour in the court was far away from being realistic which is not good, especially when you are dealing with a serious subject. Definitely lot of facts and figures are shown light which is a bit shocking to know, and they help the film. The movie goes beyond two and half hours, which is way too long considering an average treatment to the story. Director who is also the editor should ahve taken care of the prolonged film.

Performances wise, Shahid has grown to be a powerful actor like wine. He has a very good presence in the film. Shradha Kapoor is just OK. She performs well in some areas and nullifies them with artificial expressions. Divyendu has been a good actor always, but poor guy never gets substantial roles. He made his presence felt as long as he was there in the film. Yami Gautam’s screen time is minimized.

One thing which is an asset to the film is the location and the photography. The beauty of Uttarakhand is shown aesthetically. Music wise, Dekthe Dekthe and Gold Thamba are popular, but the latter’s use and need in the film are cliched.

All in all, the film is a failed attempt for a relevant issue, and the director should probably change his style, as it got repetitive right in the second film.
