Rangam 2 Movie Review – Bad Sequel

It is so common for a dubbing movie to use titles of super hit movies in order to make it reach more audience effectively and easily. Rangam starring Jeeva and Karthika, directed by K V Anand was a huge blockbuster in Telugu, which ran for over 100 days in major centres of Andhra and Telangana region. To cash its craze and popularity among audience, Jeeva starrer Yaan which was a hit in Tamil is now being released into Telugu as Rangam 2, directed by Ravi K Chandran. It is released into theatres without giving much publicity and also a few know about it’s release. Let’s see how it works on us!!

Story

Rangam 2 Photos
Rangam 2 Photos

Chandu (Jeeva), a jobless guy without having any serious aim in his life who did his MBA lives with his grandmother. He meets with Sri (Thulasi Nair) and falls for her at the first sight. She is reluctant at first and falls for him eventually. When Chandu is confronted by Sri’s father, an ex-military one (Nassar) he is pointed at his flaws of not having a job and living on the earning of his grandmother. Hurt by this, he decides to prove himself and star job searching and gets a job in Balochistan, an arab country. When he reach there he is arrested for carrying drugs and gets sentence of beheading his head. How he proved his innocence and return India forms rest of the story.

Cast and Performance

Jeeva is good as Chandu. He did everything well like comedy or action or dance. He brought a lot of charm to the character and is superb in action sequences. Thulasi Nair is good in her role as Sri. She should shed some weight to look good on screen. Nassar as retired military officer and Jaya Prakash as ACP Anwar are wasted in their roles. Rishi as Ram is good. Thambi Ramaiah and Karunakaran did fine job. Other artists are good in their roles.

Writing Department

Storyline of this movie is good and it’s screenplay is written so bad that it fails to engage audience. Dialogues are okay.

Technical Departments

Songs composed by Harris Jayaraj are okay. Better choice of lyrics could have made them better to hear. His background score is superb and worked out well with every sequence. Cinematography by Manush Nandan is nice and he delivered a best output. Editing by A Sreekar Prasad is good. Action and Stunt sequences are well composed. Production values are apt and rich.

Highlights

  • Jeeva as Chandu
  • Cinematography by Manush Nandan
  • Background score by Harris Jayaraj

Minus

  • Screenplay

Verdict

This movie Rangam-2 begins with the plan of cops to nab Malik Shah, a terrorist and succeeds well. This sequence is very interesting and there is not much to see in this half where the script and pace of the movie is spoiled by uninspiring and bored writing. Screenplay is bad and fails to engage the audience throughout this half. Second half begins on interesting note and falls flat after couple of sequences. Cameraman Manush Nandan is a the one who is talked about in every sequence. Ravi K Chandran who is debuting as director with this film, could have written a much engaging screenplay. His writing is the biggest disappointment and fails to engage the audience. Songs are the speed breakers in a disengaging screenplay except for Jeeva’s moves. Rangam 2 doesn’t live upto its first part Rangam which is a humongous hit. When bad writing and songs adds together to make it a bad movie, Jeeva and action sequences makes it somewhat a better bad movie. To sum up, Rangam 2 is a bad sequel coming after super hit Rangam.

Hansika is playing the leading lady in this romantic drama. There is a scene in the film where both Jeeva and Sibiraj fight for Hansika. Since the director felt that Jeeva’s expressions after being hit by Sibiraj were not natural, he asked Sibiraj to hit Jeeva for real so he can film natural expressions.

After Jeeva was hit, he got furious, stood up and hit back Sibiraj. Soon, the issue turned serious, and the unit members had to work hard to make peace the two actors to resume the shooting.

The director had no idea that Sibiraj and Jeeva were childhood friends. The reel incident brought huge distance between the two.

Similar plots for Vijay’s Kaththi and Jeeva’s Yaan?

Well this could turn out to be interesting – rumors have surfaced that the much awaited A R Murgadoss – Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay movie Kaththi, promised to be a ‘mass’ action thriller, and the long overdue Jeeva movie Yaan have essentially the same storylines!

Yaan-Katti

They say the plots are very similar but its the way the directors have handled their respective films and their vision (and of course the actors) that makes each movie different.

If true, this has all the signs of turning into an all out ‘Vijay vs Jiiva’ war at the box office, and with Vijay’s box office brand being on the rise again – no small thanks to Thuppakki and Jilla – and the huge fan community behind the actor, this could be the making of Jiiva or could lead to a bitter disappointment for the actor, who’s still not a top tier star in Kollywood.

Let’s also not forget that Yaan is being directed by cinematographer turned director Ravi K Chandran, whose maiden voyage into filmmaking this is. The flick has been on the floor for over a year now and it would be unfortunate for it to go straight up against one of the most anticipated movies of the year when it finally comes out.

However, the talent being sound and the craft and business of cinema being ‘unpredictable’ to say the least, this might also just be an entertainment feast for the fans with two flavours of the same dish being served – it’s up to them to choose in the end…
