A recent picture in which Ranbir, Alia and Ayan were spotted outside Big B’s office is making rounds on the internet. The actors appear like they are gathered to prepare the script. After Alia Bhatt- Ranbir Kapoor’s relationship is confirmed, this pic has gained more attention as they are spotted together. Brahmastra is slated to release on August 15, 2018. Alia, Ranbir and Mouni Roy have wrapped up the first schedule already. Amitabh Bachchan is to join the sets of Brahmastra soon.

After making a stupendous film like Talvar which gave a totally different perspective of what happened with the Talwars in the Arushi case, Meghna Gulzar arrives with a film which is again based on a true story (actually, a novel ‘Calling Sehmat’ based on the 1971 war). The movie is an espionage thriller, set in 1970. Does the lady Gulzar crack it this time too? The answer is YES.

This is the story of a 20-year old Sehmat Khan (Alia Bhatt), daughter of an opulent businessman Hidayat Khan (Rajit kapur) of Kashmir. He comes to know of a stealth news about Pakistan’s plans for war and also about a tumour in his lungs. Hidayat decides to marry his daughter to the son of a rich brigadier, who is also his old friend from Pakistan in the pre-partition era. Hidayat schemes this and before that he gets his daughter under an intelligence agent Khalid (Jaideep Ahlawat). The thriller kicks off once the marriage is done and Sehmat enters the Pakistani army family.

Screenplay is the hero of the film. Bhavani Iyer and Meghna Gulzar have made a thriller which is so different when compared to the spy thrillers we have seen so far. The best part of the film is the patriotism comes more powerfully in the subtext than any loud dialogues or any preaching’s. Everything is carried out in a classy way, without compromising on the message or its impact. The tension created is nail biting. There are very effective thrilling moments staying true to the genre. A couple of relationships were performed and executed with great panache. The first is Sehmat’s equation with the trainer, played by the underrated Jaideep Ahlawat. And the second is of Vicky Kaushals – Alia Bhatt’s husband-wife relationship. The nuances are skillfully shown.

The movie also tries to make one ponder about the politics and the aftermath of war for the humankind. The film is an adaption of the novel. The writers of the film have also apparently made it look like a peace-loving and diplomatic as opposed to the novel which was apparently calling spade-a-spade.

Performances wise, Alia Bhatt take the cake, of course a few over-acting shots to be spared. Her transformation from a tender heat to a strong-willed spy who is prepared to sacrifice her life for the nation, and late the way she sustains is noteworthy. The ensemble cast also does a wonderful job too. Interestingly, Alia’s reel life mother is played by her real-life mother Soni Razdan. The music of the film composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy bring backs the era. Lyrics by Gulzar, as always magical.The cinematography and the production department especially transports us to the 70.

The movie has a very few drawbacks which comprises of the suspension of disbelief and some intended coincidences to make the protagonists job much easier.

All in all, Raazi is not be missed for its unique story-telling and a silent patriotism.

A source close to Saaho said about casting Alia opposite Prabhas the moment they realised they can’t have Anushka on board. In fact, even mentor Karan Johar was super thrilled about this exciting collaboration and tried every way to convince Alia to take up the film which in a way would have also marked her South debut.

However, considering the heroine’s role has barely any scenes in the film in comparison to Prabhas, Alia had no choice but to reject the film.

And a source close to Alia said, “Alia is currently busy setting a league of her own by taking up some really good performance -oriented roles. So at a stage when she’s setting such a bright example as far as her film choices are concerned, she doesn’t want to break the chain by doing a film where she is more like a supporting cast. Even her family approved of her decision and has no regrets whatsoever.”

From the trailers, one might feel are we going to see a revamped Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya? The answer s fortunately NO. Badrinath ki Dulhaniya is of course a love story between Badrinath and his dulhaniya but this time with a message. Humpty Sharma was an intelligently rewritten Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge whereas Badrinath is original in its content and relevant too.

Badrinath, played by Varun Dhawan is a Jhanai boy. He belongs to an oppulent family. He falls head over heels in love with the bold Vaidehi (Alia Bhatt) when he sees her at a wedding. Vaidehi, however out rightly refuses his proposal. Badri, with perseverance is back of her and eventually they become a couple. But there is a problem. Badri, because of the upbringing, comes from a male dominated mindset, where as Vaidehi is Today;s woman. The clashes are bound to happen. The rest of the movie is about his transformation by understanding the nuances of women.

The movie talks significantly about the dowry system in a very realistic setting. The moments are subtle and natural that they perfectly reflect the regressive thoughts in the society. The first half rides majorly on humour and works most of the time. The second half gets slowed down owing to the seriousness of some situations. The comic Q and A sessions between Varun and Alia are a letdown taking away the naturality the movie is trying to establish. Why would anyone ask such abbreviations or formulae? The songs if the sequel are inferior to Humpty Sharma. Badri has no matching Main Tenu Samjhawan nor a Saturday Saturday. And for the interested, Tamma Tamma songs comes at the end credits of the movie, just in case you were expecting in the film.

The production values are very good and so is the photography and editing job.

Performances wise Alia takes the cake. She is extremely confident and impeccable. Varun also has done well but goes overboard, especially when trying to be that Jhansi guy. His body language is getting repetitive. However when they converse, some apt discussions come into the picture which make you think about the prejudices and practices that are so irrelevant today yet followed.

The supporting cast were excellent. It looks like a successful team work.

Content wise, the sequel is better. This paves the way for this Shashank Khaitans Dulhaniya franchise.

A romcom with a social message which is rare and handled very well. Thumbs Up.
