Vidya Balan as Kamala Suraiyya?

It was only a few days back that veteran director Kamal spoke of his dream project – a biopic on the confessional poetess Kamala Suraiyya aka Madhavikutty. Whilst he thought about the movie and how he wanted to tackle each important aspect of the late literary giant’s life, he admitted that he envisioned Vidya Balan playing the role.

Vidya Balan as Kamala Suraiyya

Now, it looks like there is some headway in that area! Apparently, Kamala met Vidya during some event and spoke to her about the movie, and Vidya showed interest in essaying the lead! So maybe, for real this time, Vidya Balan maybe on her way back to Mollywood.

The gorgeous, award winning actress, who is a half Malayali by birth, was actually set to make her entry in to Malayalam cinema a decade ago in another Kamal film titled Chakram. The movie, which the film maker scripted in association with the late Lohithadas, however never made it to the big screens and vanished in to obscurity.

Vidya then, after making it big in Bollywood, made her debut here in the Prithviraj starrer period flick Urumi.

Somehow it feels like a perfect fit that Vidya should play Kamala, and that should be her real big venture in Kerala. She already, from her work in Hindi, has a fan following here, and they are sure to welcome her with open arms.

Kamal says, however, that the film will only be released in 2015, and the project with Mammootty will be his next subject of focus. Any which way though, the fans are here waiting eagerly for this epic film to take shape.

The song, which is shot in Golconda Fort of Hyderabad, gives a soft and soothing feel.

From Dirty Picture to Padma Shri – Vidya Balan

padma_awards_2014_0104141256_009
Vidya Balan – The name quite reminds you of the films Kahaani and The Dirty Picture. Yes, this South Indian girl with roots from Palakkad had come a long way in Indian Cinema. Balan, who started off playing roles in telly like Radhika of Hum Paanch, did not find it easy to get to where she stands right now. A spree of hits after a struggle of 15 years has its success story.

Chitramala takes a look at the Vidya Balan uprising – from The Dirty Picture to The Padma Shri – Indeed!!

Vidya-Balan-Dirty-Picture

Parineeta (2005)

Easily that stepping stone into doing meaningful roles in Bollywood – Parineeta saw Vidya portraying a strong female protagonist, going head to head with her co-star Saif Ali Khan. This was the time of baseless skin shows and anorexic size zero figures – Vidya with her full body and complete talent got the attention worldwide as ‘Lalitha’.

What more, the lady walked away with Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut that year, apart from being nominated for Filmfare Best Actress!

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

The film may not have struck the same impulse as the first one, Munnabhai MBBS, but the critics saw through RJ Jhanvi, played by Balan. Vidya starred opposite Sanjay Dutt in an endearing role, getting praises for her performance in the movie. This started the beginning of a new era among the heroines called Vidya Balan. The other leading women have just begun to get cold feet with such competition. If you thought, this was it, then read on.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)

Balan starred as the woman possessed by a spirit of a dancer in this remake of South super hit, Chandramukhi. The role that was originally played by actress Jyothika was a challenging one to be showcased in Hindi. Vidya pulled it off with ease, sending some chill down the spine to many sitting in the theaters. She was nominated once again for Filmfare Best Actress after Parineeta for this movie.

Paa (2009)

A landmark in her own career, Paa got Vidya a whole new reputation as an actress with depth. Playing the role of a mother to a child suffering with a rare condition called progeria required guts, instensity and strong hold – all of which were showered in abundance by Balan. The movie won Vidya Balan her Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the first time, setting a new trend of method acting for the leading ladies.

Ishqiya (2010)

No looking back thereafter. Vidya followed her success meter with another mindblowing performance the very next year. Ishqiya, that released in 2010, saw Vidya playing the role of Krishna, a raw, rustic role with great detail. The role was so magnanimous that, Vidya looked like the only fit in the existing talent to carry off such a protagonist.

Once again, Balan walked away with Filmfare – this time Critics Award for Best Acctress and Nominated Best Actress.

No One Killed Jessica (2011)

Vidya played Sabrina Lal, sister of Jessica Lal who gets shot by a rich brat when she refuses to pour him a drink. The story, inspired from the real life incident in Delhi, saw Vidya play a strong character fighting for the justice in favour of her late sister. Though film did not fare well at the Box Office, Vidya was well remembered for her role.

The Dirty Picture (2011)

Once again, a milestone of sorts! Vidya Balan shed her inhibitions like never before to play the reel character inspired from the real life ex diva of South, Silk Smitha. The way Vidya dazzled in the role just blew the heads off the critics and the audiences alike. There was vulgarity with meaning, and there was a character with goods to back it up. Vidya Balan officially arrived in the top league of Bollywood with The Dirty Picture. The actress walked away with National Film Award for Best Actress and Filmfare Award for Best Actress – all in one go, amazing the Indian movie lovers.

Kahaani (2012)

Perhaps one of the most interesting characters ever played in the history of Indian Cinema, Vidya Balan stood out to be the coveted one to carry off ‘Vidya Venkatesan Bagchi’, who arrives in Kolkata with a mission. The story that surprises the audience till the end saw Vidya playing her role in full throttle. She simple shone like a powerful female protagonist, who was lost in the present Indian Cinema, carrying off the entire movie on her shoulders alone.

The film fetched her Filmfare Award for Best Actress once again, proving that size doesn’t matter when there is talent – heaps of it!!

The versatile actress of Indian Cinema will soon be seen in her next film, Bobby Jasoos, where she plays the role of a beggar out of many! Stay tuned!!

India is a country with great talents in various any fields. While legions await to be honoured, I am honoured that I have been chosen for Padma Bhushan by my government” he said.

Kangana Ranaut replaces Vidya Balan in Sujoy Ghosh film

The reigning ‘queen’ of Bollywood, Kangana is now giving cold feet to her peers in the industry. The super talented actress will now replace another winner, Vidya Balan in the upcoming film to be directed by Sujoy Ghosh.

Confirms the actress with IANS; “I would be doing the film with Sujoy. I am excited about it. It is a suspense thriller and beyond this I cannot reveal anything”. Tentatively titled ‘Durga Rani Singh’, the film will see Kangana playing the role of a 35 year old mother to a 14 year old girl with a paralytic condition, which, going by the description, seems to be a challenging one.

Kangana-Vidya

Earlier Vidya was to play this role but the actress had issues with the dates. Kangana is the sure shot replacement to such a story. Going by the popularity of Queen, many directors are now eying closely on Ranaut to carry off powerful women backed roles.

Vidya-Kangana

“I am very happy with the response to ‘Queen’. We had not expected this kind of appreciation…we are overwhelmed. We are thankful to the audience for this love for the film” she said, with a joyful tone.

Portraying strong roles comes as a niche to Kangana, right from the start. Her debut in Gangster saw her playing a full blown alcoholic and delivering some kick ass performance. Kangana then played another mind blowing role of a showstopper model in Madhur Bandarkar’s Fashion, walking away with a National Award for the same.

Looks like the Queen is on a roll!

Emraan Hashmi – The rise of a serial kisser

How rarely does this phenomenon occur where a 23 yr old working as an assistant director for a film, becomes the male lead of the sequel and the re sequel of that film? Yes, we are talking about Emraan Hashmi who assisted Vikram Bhatt during Raaz and later became a poster boy of the Bhatt camp for a decade now.

Though Emraan debuted in Footpath, he came to the limelight with Anurag Basu’s Murder where he played a role that was oozed with confidence when it came to the steamy scenes. Emraan as a womanizer on screen shocked the nation by showing no qualms in doing sex scenes in Murder. The 13 kisses in the film were a record that time, and also started the trend of bold movies in Bollywood.  Making out on a terrace in that black silky blanket was like an unofficial advertisement of what Emraan’s further movies would be

murder

Murder was followed with Tumsa Nahin Dekha where he teamed up again with Anurag Basu. The first trailer of this film had Emraan bowled by Diya Mirza at a busstop and immediately giving a lip-lock.  And that gained him the title ‘Serial Kisser’.   The movie however bombed at the box office.

zeher

Zeher was Emraan’s fourth movie and the birth of a genius director from the Bhatt camp, Mohit Suri. Emraan played a cop and was paired with Shamita Shetty and Udita Goswami.  The illicit affair aspect was present in Zeher too where Emraan is in a secret relationship with Udita. The songs of Zeher especially ‘Woh Lamhe’, and ‘Agar Tum Mil Jaao’ are extremely popular chart busters.  A new beginning of unstoppable hit music numbers of Emraan took off. The next movie of our serial kisser was Aashiq Banaaye Aapne, where the raunchiness climbed up the ramp even more.  The title song became the hottest number of the year visually, and musically too which made Himesh Reshamiyya the topmost composer for few years that followed.  Performance-wise Emraan had nothing new to offer since the Murder days.

aba

His other release in the same year was Chocolate which went unnoticed and his routine performance seemed weaker as he was acting alongside talents like Irrfan Khan and Anil Kapoor.  The next film was Kalyug, where he played a supporting role of a punk with a heart of gold.  Kalyug was Emraan’s second film with Mohit Suri. With an interesting role and relatively better performance, he climbed another step in becoming a good actor.

kalyug

Just after he made his presence felt in Kalyug, Emraan came with up with two forgettable movies which again put him in the womanizer zone and offered nothing more than a bunch of smooches.  Jawaani Deewani and Aksar damaged whatever the little amount of hope he created from Kalyug.

aksar

In 2006, Gangster came as a blessing to him where he portrays a cop in disguise.  He utilized the opportunity well to show the sleek switch from the lover to the scheming cop towards the climax.  The next significant movie where we could see a groomed actor in him was in Awarapan, again directed by Mohit Suri.  The problem however was he intermittently did some terrible movies like Good Boy Bad Boy and Killer which focused only on banking upon his serial killer image, which obviously failed at the box-office.  Not surprisingly, the ones which had substantial characterization like in Jannat worked well.

jannat2

A milestone in his career which put a stop to the inconsistency of how his movies fared at box office was Once Upon A Time In Mumbai.  It was a very important event of his career, as he passed the acid test. The acid test was performing in par with Ajay Devgan, and he came out in flying colors.   His performance as Shoaib was loved and triggered some wonderful roles in the subsequent years.  Though his ease and expertise in enacting bold bedroom scenes was continued to be used, it was given a lower priority than the characterization.  His role as Abraham in Dirty Picture was well-written and performed flawlessly.  He created a space for himself in the movie when the movie comprised gems like Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah. In Murder 2 also, he was impressive as the suspended cop trying to unveil the mystery murders.

murder 2

In the 2012 and 2013 releases, he delivered some amazing performances in three completely contrasting roles. In Ek Thi Daayan which came from the Vishal Bhardwaj camp, he played a magician Bobo, who is suspicious of women with a long plait as Daayans. In the caper comedy Ghanchakkar, he worked with the very talented Raj Kumar Gupta. His displayed some commendable histrionics as Sanjay, who loses his memory after a bank robbery.  In Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai, Emraan gave his career-best performance as Joginder in a completely deglamourized but a wonderful role.

Shanghai

The story of Emraan’s rise is a great illustration of persistence and hard-work. Emraan has come a long way from an almost B-grade hero to a bankable actor of Bollywood! The other factors which contributed to his success are: Music and Mohit Suri. Emraan is the only actor who could get numerous best-of-the-best music tracks in the last ten years. There is at least one number from each of his movies that top the charts whenever they release. Mohit Suri has been phenomenal in giving Emraan roles that would bring out a better actor out of him. From Zeher to Kalyug to Awarapan to Raaz2 to Crook to Murder 2, he has been the fuel.  Their 7th venture together is Hamaari Adhuri Kahaani which also stars great talents like Vidya Balan and Raj Kumar Rao.

ghanchakkar

His other movies to look forward in 2014 are Ungli in Karan Johar’s production and Kunal Deshmukh’s Shaatir.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects Review

Well-begun is half done. Shaadi Ke Side Effects starts off promisingly too. The movie begins with the wife and husband meeting in a pub pretending as strangers, who then get drunk and make out in the hotel room. The idea behind the insane but interesting idea is to revive the love spark between them in their busy lives.

Sid (Farhan Akhtar) is a musician trying to settle down financally, and Trisha (Vidya Balan) already has a stable career.  Sid knows how to keep the chemistry between them lively until Trisha gets pregnant. Trisha starts getting preoccupied in taking care of the baby. Sid tries to be equally involved to the extent of putting a balloon of water inside his shirt to empathize with Trisha. However, he doesn’t have that ‘mother’s instinct’ and ends up making erroneous assumptions about the baby’s needs.  As time passes, he starts feeling that the attention towards him has also vanished.  The rest of the film is about what Sid does to make himself happy and its consequences.

‘Shaadi Ke .. ‘ lacks a head and tail when it comes to story. There will be not much progress in any manner. This movie is more like a translation of the marital-woes sms jokes into a bunch of videos joined together.  However to compensate such a big drawback, there are two factors which make us overlook the story-less script: Performances and conversations.  Farhan and Vidya are nothing less than fantastic as Sid and Trisha. They play the games of Dukhi Patni versus Frustrated Pati and Negative-thinking Patni versus Escapist Pati  so well, and that’s what is the USP of the movie.  Bakthar (Balan plus Akhtar) very well know that the plot is very thin and the only they can make the movie work is by being as convincing and natural as possible. The conversations between them are natural and stay far from any artificial melodrama.  Kudos to Saket Chaudhary for the well-written dialogues too. Ram Kapoor is entertaining as the ideal father. There are also a couple of cameos by Vir Das and Ila Arun. They were impeccable too.

The second hour of the movie is a drag with things almost coming to a halt and boredom stacking up.  The last 15 minutes is atrociously ridiculous and becomes a blackmark to the decently managed screenplay till then.  Pritam’s music is a letdown too. Cinematography is adequate.

All in all, definitely worth a watch for the performances of Vidya and Farhan  especially if your age falls somewhere between 25 and 40 (to foresee, to relate or to recall)!

Farhan’s new tattoo for Shaadi Ke Side Effects

Farhan Akhtar's new tattoo

Farhan Akhtar, who plays a musician and a super flustered husband cum parent in Shaadi Ke Side Effects, has sported a new tattoo on his left side of the chest to look the part. Vidya Balan stars opposite him in this comedy that talks about various sides to being married. The tattoo sported by the actor looks simple, yet stylish, very Farhan. We do not know yet if its real or temporary for the film.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects

The trailer of the film has generated adequate interest with the film goers at this point in time. Made by Saket Chaudhary, the director of hit film, Pyaar Ke Side Effects, the film looks to be a promising popcorn multiplex entertainer. The movie is slated for a Valentine Day release worldwide next year.
