BJP Fires on Vijay’s Mersal

Mersal is the latest Tamil film that is surrounded by too many controversies now. The film has been in a controversy from the time the title was announced. Later, the film ran into a controversy during the release and then the film is now in a controversy again over a politically-loaded dialogue in Tamil superstar Vijay’s new film, Mersal, on GST, or Goods and Services Tax.

The BJP leaders of Tamilnadu are demanding cuts in the movie.Narayanan Thirupathy, the official spokesperson of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit said that the content in the film was intolerant and calls the criticism in the film was about the country. The leaders are feeling that certain dialogues in the film are “mistakenly or intentionally” was “misguiding and defaming” the country. In the film, Vijay says, about the government’s inability to provide free healthcare for all in India despite high GST rates in India, saying Singapore is able to fund a free health scheme despite a much lower GST rate.

“Don’t silence critics. India will shine when it speaks. Mersal was certified. Don’t re-censor it. Counter criticism with logical response,” Kamal Haasan tweeted in support to the film unit.
