When a film is hit or a blockbuster, makers try to cash on that by making it a series or or sequels. It is so common in Hollywood and Bollywood. When they are tried in our Tollywood, they do not meet the expectations of the audience and they disappoint big time. VIP aka Velai Illa Pattadhaari is a blockbuster in Tamil which was directed by Velraj starring Dhanush and Amalapaul. When it was dubbed and released in Telugu as Raghuvaran B Tech, it was much appreciated success. To continue that success streak and to cash on that craze, Dhanush wrote sequel for that movie and Soundarya Rajinikanth has directed it. It opened to mixed reviews in Tamil and let’s see how it works on us.
Raghuvaran (Dhanush) is an employee in Anita Constructions. He is loyal to his company and his owners for giving him employment when he has nothing and when he is jobless and he also aims to start his own company. He turns down the offer given by Vasundhara (Kajol) who is the owner of South India’s biggest construction company because of the above said reasons and Vasundhara gets offended by that. She then decides to make Raghuvaran’s life worse by spoiling his career and his company. She plays her game and how Raghuvaran withstand and play his part forms the rest of the story.
Cast and Performance
Dhanush as usually nailed his part and he played his part well. He is at ease in action part and his body language is so convincing. Kajol is nice in his role and played her part so convincingly and also looked gorgeous. Amalapaul is good as a nagging wife and complemented Dhanush well. Ritu Varma is good and is well played in her role. Samuthirakani is good as father. Balaji Mohan is good in his limited role. All other actors are equally good and convincing in their roles.
Story of VIP 2 is simple and routine. Screenplay is mediocre and dialogues are okay.
Songs composed by Sean Ronald are okay and none of the songs can be remembered after the movie. Anirudh who scored for the first half is the clear winner when compared. Background score does not help the movie in anyway. Cinematography by Sameer Tahir is good. Editing is okay and could have been much better. Action sequences are composed well.
Dhanush as Raghuvaran
Raghuvaran B Tech was a super hit because of the youthful elements as well as family emotions it had. VIP 2 lack all those elements which made the first part a super hit. Story writer and actor Dhanush failed in writing an engaging script to entertain audience. He wrote a film which has no soul but just some random scenes which are written just to create laughs. Marriage life of Raghuvaran is shown funnily but it is as well not entertaining. Kajol’s role seemed not so strong and the emotions which helped the Raghuvaran to become what he was in first part is lacking in it. Anirudh Ravichandar music helped first part so much with his beautiful tunes and soothing background score which is lacking in this part. Director Soundarya Rajinikanth did a pretty average job in making the script written by Dhanush into a film. She made even a worse film with the bad script. A better script could have made all the difference for the craze it has and the buzz it is surrounded by. All in all, bad script, bad music and bad direction made this VIP 2 a tedious fare.
