TRS to move HC against EVMs

HYDERABAD: The Telagnana Rashtra Samiti will move the High Court seeking a direction to the Election Commission not to use EVMs in the ensuing byelections in 12 Assembly constituencies in five Telangana districts.

The party, at its Politburo meeting here today, expressed doubts over the efficacy of the EVMs and the possibility of tampering even with the use of a mobile phone.

The meeting discussed the apprehensions of the people over the efficacy of the voting machines and reiterated its plea to the Election Commission to use only ballot papers, not EVMs, in the byelections on the ground that the electorate was not very sure if the EVMs were tamper-proof.

By another resolution, the party decided to file a defamation case against the police department for arresting party MP Vijayashanti and subjecting her to mental agony on the charge of fomenting hatred among people.

The Politburo finalised the election strategy of the party. Accordingly, chief K Chandrasekhar Rao will kick off the campaign on July 9 in Huzurabad Assembly constituency in Karimnagar district and will continue the campaign non-stop till July 25 in all the 12 constituencies. He will take part in several road shows and public meetings in all the constituencies and will also address the JAC public meetings.

The TRS decided to organise attractive road shows in Nizamabad and Warangal cites.

Vijayashanthi will also participate in the election campaign vigorously. Considering her frail health the party decided to provide a helicopter to her.

The TRS president handed over the B forms to the 10 candidates and cheques for Rs 1 lakh each to them. He asked them not to take the elections easy or be overconfident even though the Telangana movement was very strong in the districts. He advised them to keep in mind that the Congress was fielding strong candidates and they should, therefore, be extra-careful.
