Tollywood certainly seems to be affected by a new bug these days – making periodical movies. Way back Arundhati defined a new facet for woman oriented role being a central character of the film. Then came S S Rajamouli’s Magadheera, which blew the roofs off the Box Office with mindblowing collections.Looking at the treatment and imagination, film makers now seem to believe that periodicals have their own unique flavor and the producers are also willing to spend heavy budget for the same. Now, there are a spree of films under making and planning, keeping the audience waiting with curiosity. Baahubali, directed by Rajamouli, is already on top of the watch list for many, going by the sensational first looks and news of production values storming the internet.
Then there is Guna’s Rudramadevi, that will showcase Kakatiya Queen portrayed by Anushka, with expensive sets, costumes and technical detail. Next incoming is Trivikram’s Kobali, heavily based on Satavahana period.
In Tamil, Soundarya Rajinikanth is all set to showcase her father, Superstar Rajinikanth, in an immensely powerful warrior role, in Kochadaiyaan. Director Selvaraghavan, who made Yugaaniki Okkadu with Karthi, has now made a socio fantasy called Varna (Irandham Ulagan), and is soon planning a movie like Avatar.
All in all, period dramas are ruling the roost for the days to come. One has to see how this impacts the other genres in the offing when it comes to viewer response and commercial aspects.
