Mirzya Review – Of Daler Mehendi’s high pitch and Rakeysh’s slow motion

Inspired by a folklore, Mirzya has very big names attached to it. One is Gulzaar and the other is Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra. The folklore primarily being a love story, the element that is expected for sure is love. Unfortunately, the film scored a ZERO on that element. A simple story that could have been a Bhushan Kumar T-series 7 minute video has been made into a 2 hour 15 minute film that is all glossy and nothing else.

Is this a demo reel of photography? Or color Grading? Or the VFX? The movie is a completely self-indulgent piece which can be appreciated probably only by the writer and the director. Unfortunately, audience are not so creatively intellectual to understand the abstractness shown in the film. And the poems recited may look so good on paper, but the characters design was not even half-baked to say the least.

Mirzya is a love story of 10-year olds Mohnish and Suchitra, who play the poor boy and the rich girl. They have so much unsaid love between them and very unconditional. Mohnish ends up doing a crime and gets up getting ousted from school. He is sent to a rehabilitation school and meanwhile Suchitra’s father is transferred to another town. Mohnish escapes after a period of time and grows up becoming a caretaker of the horses in a royal estate. Also he changes his name to Adil (Harshvardhan Kapoor). The king of the estate, Karan and the grown up Suchitra (Saiyyami Kher) are already in love. Suchitra has been never been to the estate and once she comes there, after few days she realizes Adil is her childhood love. The movie then proceeds with war between love against power.

The movie has a parallel thread where we see a BC time love story happening with horses, swords and extreme slow motion and it goes on till the end without a dialogue spoken. Well this is something new, but not even remotely impactful. The ancient story tries to draw some parallels but all in vain. You only get to see some great visuals and nothing more than that.

Screenplay by Gulzar is at its worst. Whatever simple story was unnecessary killed by the slow-motion photography used excessively. Every 15 minutes, there is a high-pitch Daler Mehendi’s rendition of lyrics that are totally a mismatch to the lifeless romance progressing on the screen.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is soothing in some places.

The child actors have done really well. They made it look so convincing. Coming to the adults, it’s a pathetic film to make their debut. Reminds of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor debuting in Sawariya. Anjali Patil as Zeenat was extra-ordinary. She has a small role but a humongous impact.

There are strictly a three scenes that were top-notch. Mohsin doing a crime, Zeenat’s trying to remove the tattoo, and Zeenat’s last scene.

Mirzya is definitely one of the worst hyped films that came this year. Annoying is the word.
