Veteran actor and leading man Suresh Gopi has made a career out of playing outspoken, fiery heroes who stand for liberty and justice and the democratic way. Well, it seems the actor may have been putting a little bit of himself in to his characters or vice versa for years, because he is constantly in news these days for causes and controversies that have nothing to do with cinema!
It was just a few days ago that during a speech at some function, the Commissioner star spoke his heart against the proposed Aranmula Airport project. And during this speech, he had a few choice words for the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr Oommen Chandy himself!
The actor said the Chief Minister’s stand ‘for’ the project was anti people and anti environmental well being. He added with gusto that the Chief Minister’s words on the matter were nonsensical and if he doesn’t know the facts about something, he should consult people who know before speaking!
As if that wasn’t enough, he illustrated quite cinematically that the official government stand on the Aranmula Airport issue, makes it look like they want to build the airport on the people’s chests!
Phew! Now those are some packed punches the action hero threw at the Government..
But of course, the party in power in the State is the Indian National Congress, and boy oh boy, they were not happy with the actor. Though they have not come down on Suresh Gopi as a whole, one unit of the party – the Kanhangad unit, to be precise – have started with an official anti Suresh Gopi movement.
Yes, they have said that from henceforth they will take a non cooperative stand against the actor’s movies in Kanhangad. They will not allow any posters of him or his movies to be put up in the area either. This will continue until the hero delivers an unqualified apology to the party and the Chief Minister for his insulting comments.
It is worth mentioning that the actor’s effigies were also burned in several places.
What does the very vocal Suresh Gopi have to say to all this? We do not know yet but one gets the feeling we might not have to wait long to find out…
