PATNA: A 21-year-old student ended life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her Munnachak residence here on Monday after months of rape and assault by her spurned lover and his friends.
The body of Arya, who was doing MBA under Madurai-headquartered Kamraj University’s distance education programme, was found in her room at flat number 408, A-block, Laxmi Apartment in Patrakarnagar police station area. Her father is a clerk in private school and mother an employee of a private college.
A neighbour told, Arya’s father made a call to his house and talked to her around 1 pm. But when her mother called home around 2.30 pm, there was no response. Worried, she rushed back. The door was bolted from inside and Arya was not responding to calls to open it. A carpenter was called in, and he broke open the door for her mother and neighbours to find the young girl hanging from the ceiling fan.
Arya left behind a handwritten suicide note in which she has sought stern punishment to her tormentors. "Copies of my suicide note should be sent to the President, Prime Minister and state chief minister. My tormentors belong to influential families and they can use their influence to save their skin," the note reads.
"If you fail to do justice to my soul, at least provide protection to my father, mother and brother and do not harass them," she urged police in her suicide note.
The four-page note contains vivid details of her torture allegedly by Praveen Kumar of Central Bank Colony, Pushkar of Bankmen’s Colony and Harsh Ranjan and Jyoti Ranjan of east Ashok Nagar. She has also named Stuti, a resident of Laxmi Apartment, and her brother Shitanshu Vinit who allegedly kept an eye on her flat. They would inform Praveen the moment her parents left for work.
The suicide note alleged that Vinit, Pushkar and Harsh raped her regularly and had even made her obscene MMS after threatening to implicate her family members in false cases if she did not cooperate for the shoot. "As late as October 20, they forced themselves on me; the marks of beating can be seen on my left hand and ear," the note alleged and urged police to get her body medically examined to confirm her allegations.
An eerie silence prevailed in the Laxmi Apartment even as hordes of the family’s well-wishers kept coming in. "Once I had caught the three boys red-handed. I felt like murdering them on the spot but a crying Arya intervened to save me from going to jail," Arya’s wailing father was heard telling his visitors.
City SP Manu Maharaj said police would investigate the allegations made by the girl. "If the allegations are found true, action would be taken against them," he said and added an FIR has been lodged. The persons named in the suicide note have been made accused in the FIR, Patrakarnagar SHO Dhirendra Pandey told.
