popular playback singer Swarnalatha passed away at a private hospital here on Sunday after a brief illness.
She was 37 and a spinster. Introduced into Tamil cinema in 1982 as playback singer by the musical genius Ilayaraja through the film “Neethiku Thandanai”, Swarnalatha has dazzled with her haunting melodies in over 500 films, including Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Punjabi, in her short but brilliant musical career, film industry sources said.
In Telugu, she sang several hit numbers including Ramma Chilakamma (Choodalani Undi), Chinni tandri (Sisindri), Intiki Vedadam Padavammo (Aavida Maa Aaavida), Naa Siggu Tambulalu (Time), etc. She sang mostly for Ilayaraja and A.R.Rahman.
Hailing from Palakkad in Kerala, Swarnalatha has won several awards, including the National Award in 1996 for her song “Porale Ponnuthayi” in the Tamil film “Karuthamma”.
A large number of film personalities paid homage to Swarnalatha after her body was brought to her residence here.
