What does one remember when one says the names Mohanlal and Manju Warrier in the same breath? Of course, the iconic movie Aaram Thamburan and maybe then the much loved Kanmadam. The two actors only shared screen space in lead roles in two movies over a decade and a half ago but managed to carve their respective characters and their captivating chemistry in to the hearts of Malayalis everywhere. Now Manju is making a comeback in to the industry, only to battle Mohanlal in the opening weekend wars, with their movies coming out pretty much together.
Yes, the two hugely anticipated movies – Rosshan Andrrews’ How Old Are You starring Manju and B Unnikrishnan’s controversial flick Mr Fraud with Mohanlal in the lead – are slated for release this weekend and it will be the fans who will have to eventually make their choice known at the box office records.
This is indeed a fateful turn of events, as initially it was rumored that Manju would be making her comeback in a Ranjith movie opposite Lal himself. But then the project was apparently shelved for unknown reasons (much to the dismay of the fans) and Manju’s return to the big screen took the form of Andrrews’ inspirational female centric film How Old Are You.
Mohanlal starrer Mr Fraud, of course, had its own lion’s share of troubles associated with its release with all the organizations in the industry (actors, directors, producers, distributors and theatre owners) being forced to choose sides in a feud that raged on for days in the public eye.
While Mohanlal may be one of the most beloved actors in the industry, Manju Warrier is no newbie and has her own loyal fan base which stuck by her side for over 14 years of retirement, eagerly waiting for her re entry in to the world of movies. It is rare to see such steady admiration for an actor whose on screen career was brief and her personal life subject to much controversy with regard to her much talked about divorce. Guess raw talent and a magnetic persona count for many things in the end…
Let’s wait and see what happens when the fans finally get their say in the matter – as is their right.
