Jagan, Vijayalakshmi file nominations!

HYDERABAD: It was quiet affair as two people Jagan Mohan Reddy and Vijayalakshmi filed their nomination papers from Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly constituency on Wednesday without much fanfare.

Wait and don’t jump to conclusions. They are not YS Jaganmohan Reddy and his mother YS Vijayalakshmi. They are two people with similar names. According to the Election Commission, two nominations one each for Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly were received from Chinta Jaganmohan Reddy and T G Vijayalakshmi respectively.

The YSR Congress reacted saying that this was cheap tactic resorted to by the Congress party to try and create confusion among the voters. But people here know who are the real contestants, the party leaders said. If the voter by any chance overlooks the surname of candidate and press the button in favour of independent candidate it could cause loss to the YSR Congress Party.

It is learnt that the Jaganmohan Reddy, (independent) who filed the nomination on Wednesday is a close relatives of Kamalapuram MLA G Veera Siva Reddy, while T G Vijayalakshmi is a native of Simhadripuram. Sources in the Congress party told TOI that there will be few more independent candidates with the identical names.

During the 2009 general elections, when an editor of a popular Urdu news paper Zahid Ali Khan was contemplating to file as independent candidate for Hyderabad Lok Sabha against MIM, a person with similar name filed as an independent. What’s more interesting is their father’s names also matched. To avoid the confusion, the editor contested on the TDP’s ticket.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a delegation of TDP lodged complaint with the chief electoral officer Bhanwar Lal against huge flow of money. The delegation led by deputy leader in the assembly M Narsimhulu demanded that the EC take stern measures to check the flow of money. He also demanded that proper security arrangements be made so that every party can safely keep their polling agents in the booths. Kadapa is known for cases of physical elimination of election agents, he added.(TNN)
