England recall Pietersen for India ODI tour!

Middle-order batting mainstay Kevin Pietersen got the recall while paceman James Anderson was rested as England today announced a 15-member ODI squad for the upcoming limited overs tour of India.

Pietersen returned to England One-Day International squad after he was given a break by the English selectors in this month’s 3-0 ODI series win over India at home.

Apart from Pietersen, two other players — Durham’s Scott Borthwick and Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes — who were not part of the ODI series win over India, have also been included in the touring side to be led by opener Alastair Cook.

The selectors, however, have left out pace spearhead James Anderson from the touring squad, saying the decision to exclude him was ‘in line with our policy of sensibly managing player workloads.’

Left-handed batsman Ben Stokes has also been ignored so that he can undergo a rehabilitation programme on his finger injury.

The ODI squad will have only one uncapped player in Surrey fast bowler Stuart Meaker.

The selectors handpicked two additional players — Jos Buttler (Somerset) and Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire) — who will join the squad ahead of the Twenty20 fixture in Kolkata on October 29.

Regular Twenty20 skipper Stuart Broad, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a shoulder injury, will join the squad in India if he completes his rehabilitation programme ahead of schedule.

If Broad is unavailable, off-spinner Graeme Swann will lead the Twenty20 side, national selector Geoff Miller said.

The four-week tour includes five One-Day Internationals and an international Twenty20 fixture against India, starting with the first ODI in Hyderabad on October 14.

"This squad contains an exciting balance of experienced international cricketers along with some very talented younger players who can play the high quality limited overs cricket needed to challenge India," Miller said in a statement.

"A number of injuries and a decision to omit James Anderson in line with our policy of sensibly managing player workloads give opportunities for other very talented players to continue to develop as international cricketers.

"The additions to the squad for the Twenty20 fixture will strengthen the squad and provide Jos Buttler and Alex Hales with valuable experience of playing in the sub-continent," he added.

England ODI squad: Alastair Cook (captain), Jonathan Bairstow, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Scott Borthwick, Tim Bresnan, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Craig Kieswetter, Stuart Meaker, Samit Patel, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott, Chris Woakes.
