Earthquake blamed for divorces in China

Experts in China are blaming the devastating Wenchuan earthquake of 2008 for the rise in divorces in China from 13,525 in 2003 to 39,020 last year.

The China Daily estimated that some 1.3 million couples got divorced nationwide as social mobility played an important role in the rise in divorce rate. With the revised Regulation on Marriage Registration the number of couples untying the knot has increased continuously for seven years from 2003.

The earthquake that killed more than 69,000 people and left an additional 18,000 missing has left the Sichuan residents rethink about the short and unpredictable life and people decided to live each day to the fullest.
