In an unexpected turn of events, the state Congress leadership finalised the name of the medical and health minister, Dr D.L. Ravindra Reddy, late on Thursday as the party’s candidate to take on Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in the Kadapa Lok Sabha bypoll.
The decision was taken after a marathon meeting with the Kadapa Congress leaders at the Chief Minister’s camp office where Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, in consultation with party affairs in-charge and Union minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, finalised the name of Dr Ravindra Reddy. “When the party asked me to fight against Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy who had challenged the Congress leadership, I could not shirk my responsibilities as a loyal Congress worker,” Dr Ravindra Reddy told this correspondent after the meeting. Dr Ravindra Reddy’s name will be officially announced on Friday by the AICC. Like the TD, which changed its candidate for the Kadapa bypolls in the last minute from Mr Putta Chaitanya Reddy to Dr M.V. Mysoora Reddy, the Congress too chose Dr Ravindra Reddy after deciding first on Mr Kandula Rajamohan Reddy who had just joined the party on Thursday.(DC)
