Deccan Chargers broke a four-match jinx to beat Kings XI Punjab for the first time and record their first-ever win at “home”.
Captain Adam Gilchrist smashed 33 (12b 2×6, 4×4), Symonds sizzled with 53 (38b, 3×4, 3×6) as Chargers made 170. Punjab fell six runs short, with Irfan Pathan providing a scare with a 29-ball 60 (3×4, 5×6).
The bowling came good with Chaminda Vaas taking out Kumara Sangakkara and Yuvraj Singh. R.P. Singh, Pragyan Ojha and Rohit Sharma picked one each. Symonds snagged Mahela Jayawardane and held catches to dismiss top-scorers Ravi Bopara and Pathan.
Jaskaran Singh got the last over, with Punjab in touching distance and Pathan on a rampage. Singh calmly dismissed Pathan and bowl out the match. Gilchrist said later that he picked Singh as he had asked for a bowl. DC mascot Gayatri Reddy rated the win as “excellent.”
Gilchrist noted that wickets fell at key moments. Something he will rectify on Sunday when DC meet Delhi Daredevils here.(PTI)
