Noted Bollywood producer Firoz A Nadiadwala has been sentenced rigorous imprisonment for a period of three months as he delayed a year to pay back the amount of Rs. 8.56 lakhs as Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) for the financial year 2009-10. The verdict was given by Ballard Pier magistrate court.
The defense lawyer of Firoz stated that his client couldn’t pay the amount as he was not making money from last three years and all he got was through selling the rights of his old films. But the court rejected the claim made by the defense by saying that the accused cannot withhold the government money for his own purposes.
The court stated that the evidence clearly shows that the accused didn’t have any financial constraints over the past few years and thus defended its decision. Meanwhile, Firoz’s defense stated that people are conspiring against the producer to damage his fame.
