She is talented, she is dynamic and she is easily one of the most followed actresses in South Film Industry. Jyothika may have taken a long sabbatical from films post her marriage with Surya ever since 2006 but her charm remains intact. As our ‘Chandramukhi’ turns a year older today, we take a look at some important snapshots from her life and career.
Mumbai to Chennai – Jyothika was born to a film producer, Chander Sadanah in Mumbai. Her sister Roshini acted in one film opposite Megastar Chiranjeevi in ‘Master’ and her brother Suraj is an Assistant Director with Priyadarshan. Her half sister Nagma, is a well known actress in Telugu and Tamil in the 90s.
Entry into Kollywood – After a failing debut with Priyadarshan’s Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, Jyothika landed in Chennai. Success came her way in the brightest of ways. She was quickly noticed for her great screen presence in films like Vaali, Khushi and Rhythm. Her scintillating performance as a jealous girlfriend Jennifer won her a Filmfare for Best Actress – Tamil. The ride from here on was a roller coaster.
Series of hits – Thenali, Poovellam Un Vasam, 12B, Dhool and Khaka Khaka – all of them proved her mettle as an actress as she kept belting out hits. Her breakthrough performance came in 2005 where she played a dual role in the hit horror flick, Chandramukhi. Her performance as a possessed woman with a spirit of a dancer sent a shiver down thousands of spines. This fetched her Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress. She won another one of the similar award for her strong performance in 2007 film, Mozhi as Archana.
Tollywood superhits – Jyothika acted in two direct Telugu Superhits – Tagore opposite Megastar Chiranjeevi and Mass opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna. She acted in another film, Shock, opposite Ravi Teja. She came out of her ‘Tamil’ tag as people could relate to her as a ‘Telugu’ girl in both these films. Ever since, she started having a great following among Telugu audience as well.
Love and Marriage with Surya – Jyothika’s affair with ‘Ghajini’ superstar Surya was a sensation in early 2000. She and Surya dated for years before they decided that it was indeed a serious relationship and is headed towards nuptials. They tied the knot in 2006 amidst much fanfare and blessings. It was also well known that actress Bhumika nursed intense feelings for Surya at the same time when he was seeing Jyothika. However, no amount of distraction affected the bonding these two shared.
Now a happily married wife and mom to two children, Jyothika is enjoying her sabbatical to the fullest measure. However, we cannot wait to see our ‘Nandini’ back on Silver Screen.
