Gundla Ramakka (Ramulamma) is a folk singer from Sydapuram, Telangana. She predominantly sings about the state of Telangana, be it the struggles faced during its partition or just praising the state. She is famous for her Bathukamma songs, that are sung during the festival of Bathukamma. She proudly shares that when someone tells her a story, she can sing it back to them in little time.
Bathukamma is a festival of flowers celebrated massively in the state of Telangana. It is a 9-day festival during which the women stack beautiful flowers in circles and worship it to please the Goddess Mahagauri.
Unfortunately, she lost her eyesight 6 years ago, but that didn’t stop her from doing what she loved the most, ‘Sing’. She has even attended many meetings where people welcomed her with open arms and cherished her songs.
She also thanks the Telangana Government for giving Rs. 1500 as she is visually impaired, but also urges that an extra Rs. 500 will be very useful for her. But any which ways, singing is what matters to her the most and says, “I was born to sing and will be happy to die doing it”.
