After a masterpiece like Kahaani and its underrated sequel, Sujoy Ghosh is back with an official remake of the Spanish Film Invisible Guest. Kahani proved the mettle of Mr.Ghosh in dealing with thrillers. He now takes up an already successful thriller and how did he rework the thriller? Well, it fell in the right hands and he seemed to adeptly remake it.
Badla is fundamentally a murder mystery. Like Pink, even this film has Big B defending TapseePannu in a case where she is accused of a murder. Bachan plays Badal Gupta a renowned lawyer who has an impeccable track record in winning the cases. He never tasted failure and now lies another case and he is in the quest of truth while Tapsee (NainaSethi), the accused has all the evidences that indicate that she is the culprit. The rest of the film is about how the moments unravels and what’s the final truth.
The film has quite a lot of twists and turns to keep you hooked to the film. Though, this is a remake, the film has a fresh flavor, where it doesn’t matter if you have already watched the original. Its rare for a thriller to have that quality. Credit for that goes to the original creator as well as Sujoy Ghosh. The screenplay is taut and hardly goes out of hand. The characters you support suddenly start creating doubts in your mind and probably even changes whom you were rooting for.
The performances are top-notch in the film. Sujoy Ghosh had earlier collaborated with AB in Aladdin. Big B delivers an award-winning performance yet again. Bonus is he has no awful makeup like in Pink. His pauses, one liners, questioning, intensity — everything is bang on. It’s not an easy task to perform on par with someone like him, but Tapsee nails it and how. Great confidence and conviction. Amrita Singh is impressive too.
With not a great track list, the movie has a suitable background score which only enhances the film. Shahrukh Khan being the producer made sure no stone unturned for the production values. The movie has a fine finish. Also, cinematography is neat.Rumours had that SRK is doing a cameo, but he didn’t.
Another aspect where the film scores is the layers it holds. The movie has designed the characters and scenes in so much detail, and they take the movie to the next level.
The flipside of the film is it carries a part of predictability and moreover, it’s a remake of a popular film.
All in all, Badla is an edge of the seat thriller and deeply satisfies the movie lover in you.
