She had however turned a dubbing artiste and had lend her voice to Pooja Kumar in Vishwaroopam, and it was then that her Virumandi co star Kamal Haasan kind of persuaded her to make a comeback to tinsel town.
Abhirami did take the suggestion to heart apparently as she is making a comeback in the Madhav Ramadasan film Apothecary opposite Suresh Gopi. The flick also stars Jayasurya, Asif Ali and Meera Nandan in lead roles and is touted as a medical thiller.
However, it will be the flick after that, directed by newcomer Manoj Paloden titled Driver on Duty that sees her in the Khaki uniform as a police inspector. Yes, Abhirami will play an S.I of police in charge of a women’s police station and Asif Ali will be playing the lead male role.
The film is a comedy that tells the tale of a male police driver named Ramakrishnan (Asif) out on duty at a female police station. The other important roles will be tackled by Lena, Janani Iyer and Rachana Narayanankutty.
Supposedly, Abhirami’s character in the movie, Arundhati Varma, is based on a real life police officer S.I. Kuttiyamma, one of the first female cops in Kerala.
It has also been reported that initially the makers of the flick had tried to rope in Ramya Krishnan for the role but later she had backed out of the project due to other engagements.
So it seems many of the actresses from the south who ‘quit’ the industry post marriage or for other reasons are making a comeback these days. There was Manju Warrier’s controversial but highly succesful comeback and then Priya Raman too followed by Kashthuri, Jyothika possibly and then Roma Asrani.. sort of.
Who will make that fateful decision next?
