The GHMC has asked chains of retail outlets and supermarkets to offer incentives to customers coming with their own cloth or eco-friendly carry bags.
The civic body is holding meetings with the managements of retail chains like Reliance Fresh, Big Bazaar, Spencers and Pantaloons, etc, urging them to give a discount of Rs 5 to Rs 10 on purchases of `200 if customers bring their own cloth bags or repeat the above-40 micron carry bags provided by the retailers earlier.
The GHMC commissioner, Mr M.T. Krishna Babu, said that the traders had also been asked to upgrade their billing software to include charges for carry bags given to customers.
The GHMC chief added that several NGOs had shown interest in taking up campaigns to create awareness among the public about the ban on below-40 micron plastic carry bags and the overall harmful effects of plastic. He said that the GHMC, in association with NGOs, would launch a campaign spread over three months.
On petty traders and some retailers continuing to use below 40-micron plastic bags, Mr Babu said, “Their stocks will not last for more than 15 days. We have seized 2,000 kg of below-40 micron carry bags and sent them for recycling.”(DC)
