Roy Movie Review:Refreshing storyline, and earnest performances

The story of the puzzling thief, which is the story born out of Director Kabir Grewal’s brain, and its inferences drawn from the his own personal life, is a breath of fresh air on the Silver Screen. Vikramjit Singh’s directorial debut is nothing close to amateurish and has finesse of its own kind. The film’s storyline is gripping as it promised and the idea of parallel plot is invigorating. It is something different!

Story of ‘Roy’ is one such cinematic empiricism that you’d love to be roped into the plot, you witness on screen. At times the film is so engrossing that there seems to be thin-line between the parallel plots that we see on the screen. The film is well thought of and executed in a fantastic manner too. It is that film, which will make you think and keeps the mystery of the characters alive.

It isn’t possible to talk much about the story without giving much away. But there are two love stories on screen, veiled with the air of mystery in one. While Kabir and Ayesha’s romance is pretty much evident, you’d actually be wondering which way Roy and Tia’s love life is headed to. The two stories are infused into one, and only one is happening in real life. Now you have to watch to find out which one is the imaginary figment!

Star Performances:

Arjun Rampal has always been one of those actors who was never hyped for his acting potential. But time and again, Arjun has surprised us all with his acting mettle. In Roy too, we see Arjun in a very riveting avatar and he does a really good job throughout the whole film. He juggles between his various traits such as playboy to stoic to thoughtful, throughout the film. And all the shades are pulled off well! Plus, he looks extremely hot on screen. That is just stating the obvious!

Ranbir Kapoor is Roy, the con man, who has a dense fog of mystery around him and is born out of imagination. Watching this Kapoor on screen is always a delight! Ranbir is too good in terms of acting. With the vast variety of work he has done in the past, each different from one, R.K as Roy is another feather in his glorious cap. He has that calmness, yet the intensity. His part is catered to the optimum, but we can never get enough of him, like, ever! The character is brisk yet succoring.

Jacqueline Fernandez has a double role in the film and in both the roles Jacky manages to impress us all. She looks really good on screen and in terms of acting too, she is quite nice. As Director Ayesha Aamir, she has a colorful personality and plays her part in the plot aptly. As Tia, she is elite and very-ladylike with a certain level of calmness.

Technicalities:

As director and story-teller, Vikramjit Singh has done a remarkable job. This man has a vision and even the power to project that vision on screen. He knows how he wants to place his characters in the plot, and presents them in the most intriguing manner. The storyline of the film is unusual and brilliant. He has a fine understanding of cinema and that we can see on screen clearly. Every story needs an ending, but what if the ending was where it all began? Taking the concept beautifully ahead, Vikram has made a really successful debut.

The cinematography needs special mention as the film, shots, angles, scenic beauty, all look marvelous. Himman Dhamija is the man behind the job and it is a job well done, I say! The film’s music has been the talk of the town, since the first trailer made its way to us. With a variety of tracks to pick from, the score is quite nice.
The way the lives of the characters intertwine and merge into one single plot is sheer bliss.

Watch or Not:

For the masala commercial lovers, Roy isn’t the film for you. If you seek just entertainment in terms of action sequences, latkas-jhatkas and larger than life sequences, Roy isn’t anything around that. But if you are up for a film that will hold your attention throughout and has a great story to offer, watch Roy. Watch it for great acting, for vivid storyline and to entrap the vision of the Director.

Thumbs Up: Acting, story, storytelling, scenic beauty

Thumbs Down: A few flaws here and there, length of the film.

Yawns: Barely and rarely
