HYDERABAD: Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Friday dipped into his old bag of tricks and pulled out two that are meant to stymie Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Odarpu Yatra next month to capture the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s legacy.
One, the cabinet meeting chaired by him at the Secretariat on Friday announced grand plans to celebrate the birthday of the deceased leader on July 8, the very day Jagan plans to set out on his campaign in Srikakulam. Two, the cabinet also decided to convene a 10-day monsoon session of the Assembly from July 7.
The government’s YSR birthday celebrations are aimed at giving the lie to any potential claim by Jagan that his father’s welfarist vision has been abandoned by his successor. And the shotgun session of the Assembly will effectively see to it that MLAs and ministers stay put in the capital to attend to the people’s business.
Sources said ministers loyal to Jagan did not raise any objections to the two decisions by the cabinet today. At least some of them have been caught between a rock and a hard place by Jagan’s tactics of stepping up his challenge to the Rosaiah government degree by degree. The Assembly session and the YSR celebrations will supply them a pretext with which to fob off Jagan’s unofficial demands that they participate in his yatra in the districts.
Sources in the Congress said the gambit of convening an Assembly session and celebrating YSR’s birthday was adopted as per the party high command’s advice. This is yet another indication that the imperium in Delhi is not ready to let Jagan go ahead with his tour on July 8.
