A huge earthquake of 8.7 on Richter scale has hit the westernmost Aceh province in Indonesia’s Sumatra Islands on Wednesday. Tremors were also felt in Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Patna, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Cuttack, Bhuvaneshwar and several other cities on the eastern coast of India.
A tsunami warning was issued for the whole Indian Ocean. India has also issued tsunami warning for coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands following the earthquake.
The earthquake was felt as far away as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and in southern India, residents said. Hundreds of office workers in the Bangalore left their buildings, workers there said.
