Interview with Siva Nageswara Rao
Comedy belongs to all seasons: Siva Nageswara Rao
"Bhukailas" – a Siva Nageswara Rao film, starring rib-splitter Venu Madhav as hero, is all set for a hilarious release tomorrow. The flourishing Real Estate boom not only in Hyderabad, but elsewhere in the state, itself came as big mouth publicity to the movie. This director, who shot to limelight with his Money (1993) believes in comical presentation of real things with realistic imagination. He says he took a wrong course with his last flick "Photo",treading the path of wild imagination. However,he fast retreated to his own royal road.Excerpts from a brief interaction with him:
Chitramala: What went wrong with "Photo"?
Siva Nageswara Rao: I have no reservation while accepting the mistakes. I just intended to make an experiment by clubbing comedy with serious element of murder mystery in Photo. You all know the result. Anyway, I am happy I learnt a lesson and hope to stick to my royal path.
Chitramala: There is talk that Bhukailas is parody of the Real Estate Boom?
Siva Nageswara Rao: Parody or something else, it is not my concern. I give sincere play to my feelings as a writer and as a director, holding nothing malice towards any individual or system. You all know. What was Hyderabad a decade ago? See it now. The rural population is a happy lot now, shedding their lifestyle in sweat and distress. Today, the lands in the outskirts of Hyderabad are producing not crops, but wades of currency.
Chitramala: It seems you have given extra dimension to the reality?
Siva Nageswara Rao: No,certainly not. There are certain things. We don't have any right to criticize them. That is a way of life, which comes to people by sudden change … call it Real Estate Boom or their luck.Poverty-ridden people have turned to be roaring millionaires. They are enjoying the luxuries. While doing so, they too have to change their lifestyle, though difficult! I have made an honest presentation of the reality with absolutely realistic treatment. But one thing is sure. You need powerful imagination to make a comedy film succeed.
Chitramala:Why did you pick up Venu Madhav alone for the hero?
Siva Nageswara Rao: Venu Madhav is a sincere artiste. He has lots of creativity and involves himself in any project. Moreover, the story demands such an artiste. Venu plays the role of Kailasam. He leads a miserable life. Cycling long distances with milk cans tied to his old vahanam. His life comes to a damp stagnation. That time, a multinational company selects his two acre land for building their extensions. Immediately, Kailasam is offered Rs. 100 crore for his two acres of land. Rs. 50 crore per acre! Overnight, Kailasam changes his name to Kailash. He just kicks his cycle and the milk cans. Soon, he becomes Five Star Kailash in film industry. Whether he succeeds or not, it's only to be watched.
Chitramala: Is it a satire on the neo-rich?
Siva Nageswara Rao:I already said. I am not criticizing anyone or any system. It is hundred percent a comedy and my aim is to make my audience laugh to the full of their stomachs. All the characters in the film are near to reality. Tannikella Bharani, who played the role of Manikyam in my earlier flick Money, is playing the role again in Bhukailas.
Chitramala:Are you satisfied with your success director of comedy films? You have any plans to jump to other genres once again?
Siva Nageswara Rao:Why not! I am very happy with my career. Of course, a life that runs plain is of no thrill. I don't say no to other genres if I really get one. For the time-being, I am fixed to my ring of lighter-vein entertainment. Comedy belongs to all seasons!
