Duggal to try dinner diplomacy to win over panel opponents

The former home minister, Mr V.K. Duggal’s idea of dinner diplomacy to break the ice with political parties having apprehensions about the Justice B.N. Srikrishna committee seems to be working.

It is learnt that the presidents of the eight recognised political parties in AP, including that of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, are willing to attend the dinner which the Governor, Mr E.S.L. Narasimhan, will host at Raj Bhavan on Thursday.

Official sources told this correspondent that it was Mr Duggal who came up with the idea of dinner for politicians during his previous visit to the state capital.

“In all, 18 people, including the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, and the chief secretary, Mr. S.V. Prasad, will have the strictly vegetarian dinner,” a senior official said.

Sources said the committee members would briefly explain their objectives and methodology at the dinner meeting.

“It will be purely informal to build rapport and ensure that all stakeholders participate in future deliberations,” the official pointed out.

All committee members except Justice Srikrishna flew down here from Delhi in the afternoon. Justice Srikrishna, who was in Mumbai, arrived in the evening.

The committee had already announced that it would neither entertain any representations nor meet delegations during their visit. The committee members will visit Jubilee Hall and Dr MCR HRD institute on Friday. The Chief Minister will call on the committee on the second day.

Each member will specify the information they are looking at on socio economic parametres.

Each member will have a meeting with the chief secretary and the nodal officer, Mr Rajiv Sharma, to gather statistical data that they require.(DC)
