Badlapur Movie Review: Grisly, sinister and grody.

Badlapur is grisly, sinister and grody. The neo-noir drama is an affair, you’d like to watch. With packed brilliance in terms of acting and peculiar in terms of story, Badlapur is a film that will leave a mark in Bollywood. Sriram Raghavan is the man behind the brilliance and it is his best so far. Varun Dhawan has a vindictive vendetta and shines throughout the film. And as for Nawazuddin Siddiqui, take a bow!

The deviant vengeful drama is something you’d not be able to just shrug to or shudder off. It does leave you thinking about the film throughout and after you leave the screen. The twisted plot is given a right treatment and resultant story is atypical from all the crime dramas you have witnessed until now.

The film scores really high in terms of acting and the plot seems complete, just the last one piece missing. The ending of the film is out of norm and will likely come as unexpected. Throughout the film you’d see revenge brewing and how devious a human mind can get.

Star Performances:

Whoever said that this Star-kid was here to just look good on screen and tallies low on acting front, with Badlapur, Varun shuts all up! He has delivered his best till date and we quite didn’t know this cute-looker Student could carry off such a vengeful role with sheer brilliance. Until now we have seen Varun in light roles, but in Badlapur, the viewers are in for a treat for his dark acting skills. His brooding avatar of a man who lost his wife and son in a robbery, and seeks revenge from the killers will leave you astounded. As the movie’s tagline suggests, “Don’t miss the beginning”, you surely wouldn’t like to miss the beginning of Varun’s acting potential of meaty roles.

Whenever au naturale Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a part of any film, it isn’t hard to guess that he would deliver an amazing performance. And with Badlapur, Nawaz takes his acting a notch higher. After having seen him in so many different shades, it is really hard to pinpoint when Nawaz is being repetitive on screen. As a matter of fact, he is never looks like. With Liak, Nawaz shines too bright and takes the show away gracefully by the end of the film. His character is shady and has a comic sense of one-of-a-kind. He puts on front innocence and deviousness at the same time.

As for the ladies, they all have brief roles and do what they are told by the director. Be it Yami as Raghu’s wife, Huma as Jhumli, Divya as Shobha and Radhika as Kanchan. They all have a part to play and do their job till the optimum. Vinay Pathak has a small yet pivotal role in the film and does it very nicely.

Technicalities:

Sriram Raghavan is back after a gap of three years and it is apt to say that he is back with a bang. The film is treated through a different funnel all together and darkness of the story spreads from scene one. The man has even written the film along with Arijit Biswas and as both director and writer, Sriram has done justice to the film. Sriram has given us films like Ek Hasina Thi, Johnny Gaddar, Agent Vinod and now Badlapur and with each film the bloodcurdling becomes more profound. He has done a spectacular job with Badlapur. Just that Varun as a middle-aged man should have been a lil older then even lookwise, the film would have been more convincing. The film loses pace in the second half, but picks up soon.

On the cinematography front, the film is really nice. The angles, shots, use of light, setting all fall into place and on the whole the flick looks good. The film’s music is more like in the background and doesn’t come to take you to a fanasty-land or deviates from the plot. Songs are placed well and are soulful too. Jeena Jeena and Jee Karda are already chartbustering tracks.

Watch or Not:

Certainly! Watch Badlapur for Varun’s strong-willed acting, Nawazuddin’s sweet and salty avatar, and some gruesome neo-noir crime drama. Also, it is a Sriram Ragahavan film and that man surely doesn’t disappoint you. Amidst all commercial masala entertainers, Badlapur stands out and offers Entertainment very different from the rest of the films you have watched. This tale of retribution served over 15 years is one that should not be missed.

Thumbs Up: Plot, brilliant acting, grim storyline

Thumbs Down: Loses its pace for a while

Yawns: A couple
