Baby Movie Review: Action Adrenaline Mix, Neeraj Pandey excels again

When Neeraj Pandey brings a film on the platter for us, it has expectations mountain-high. And the Director delivers up to the mark every time. Neeraj Pandey has given us beautiful films like A Wednesday, Special 26 and now Baby.

For those who wondered the mystery behind the name Baby, so it is because their short-term five year operating unit was temporary and they were in nascent stage, hence Baby. The film is intriguing, has its highs and lows but is a great watch.

It brings on the silver screen some brilliant performances and the roles are assorted in a way that fit right in. The game was big and risky and the players were splayed. They did what they set out to do, with thrills and chills.

The story and direction is by Neeraj Pandey and it is rightly said that this genre belongs to him. He has again given us a film that will have a great shelf-life. The Indian Intelligence and ATS has unsung heroes and we through Neeraj’s vision, come face to face with their untold tales of heroism.

Star Performances:

Akshay Kumar shines in the role of and it is his film completely. But having said that it doesn’t mean others were lesser than him. It is just his charm and charisma out-powered everyone else’s. Akki has awed us all with his last association with Neeraj in terms of Special 26, and with Baby, the undercover cop was highlighted like never before. By far, this can be one of his brilliant acts we have seen on silver screen. In the persona of Ajay Singh Rajput, Akki has given us a really awing performance.

Danny Denzongpa is sheer brilliance like we know him. As their chief, Feroz Ali Khan, the man has spearheaded the operation and has acted too well. He has the calm and the temper required for the role. Danny has such great body of work that in any film, he just shines too bright.

Anupam Kher as Shukla is that man who is the brains of the operation. He has the wits and the humor, and is a marvelous asset to the team. His coinage of Akki as Tarzan and Rana as Hulk is aptly put. Rana Daggubati as Jai Singh Rathore is quite nice too. He did what was given to him with conviction. Taapsee Pannu has a brief role and that lady just rocked the screen time she was allotted with her action sequence. Mikaal Zulfikar as Ashfaq was a pretty pleasant face to see. (*winks* Not that Akshay or Rana aint hot enough)

When the protagonists are strong, it becomes a challenge to have really strong antagonists too. Filling that space perfectly is Kay Kay Menon as Bilal Khan, the terrorist and Rasheed Naz as Maulana Mohammed Rahman. While for Kay Kay it can be said that in lesser words, the man spoke in loud volumes. And for Rasheed, it was like he did it with perfection. Sushant Singh has a small role too and in that is nicely done.

Technicalities:

In terms of story, it is a really gripping plot and has a great storyline. Neeraj has shown Indian espionage in a great way. Also a brilliant story is given a finer edge in terms of direction by him. The man is a master and has given a film that we’d love to watch again. Just the duration of the film is pretty long and there are a few joints where you feel the film losing its momentum.

Cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee is a work of mastery. The film flows smooth, despite the few downs, when the story lost its pace. The end sequence of the action-packed thriller was thrilling enough and will keep you on your toes.

Music fits in well and there is no Bollywood style jhatkas-matkas, and no attempt to make it a Bollywood Masala Film. That keeps the essence of the film alive and it blooms. The background score by Sanjoy Chowdhury is in sync with the story.

Watch or Not:

A must watch as I put it. You might as well be reminded of Ben Affleck’s Argo while the Airport Sequence is shot. The twist in the plot was quite nice. Watch it to witness what level Indian Espionage attains and peaks while combating with Terrorism. Who knows this work of fiction, might be implementing in real life, right this moment, in some part of the world? The film is a good mix of action and adrenaline rush and Neeraj Pandey excels once again!

Thumbs Up: Good story, great performances, keeps the thrill intact

Thumbs Down: Duration of the film

Yawns: A few because of the length of the film
