Anjaana Anjaani is about an unlikely romance between two unhappy people who meet when both try to kill themselves by jumping off the same bridge.
Through the course of the film, they give suicide a few more tries. You wish they had succeeded the first time itself because then we would have been spared the anguish of watching this vacuous travelogue masquerading as a movie.
Director Siddharth Anand trained at the school of Yash Raj and you will recognize the familiar tropes: stars, styling, foreign locations. There’s even a morning-after-drunken-night-did-we-have-sex scene similar to the classic moment in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jeyenge.
But unlike DDLJ, here the emotions and characters are singularly plastic.
Akash, played by Ranbir Kapoor and Kiara, played by Priyanka Chopra, have no discernable texture or roots. They are supposed to be unemployed, lonely and desperately sad but they always look like they’ve stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine.
Which could have been overlooked if there was any depth in their angst but these two seem like spoilt kids playing suicide-suicide.
The premise of two sad people meeting on a bridge and going on a road trip is taken from the French film Girl On The Bridge. The idea of a to-do wish-list before dying echoes The Bucket List. The poster is copied from An Education.
But Anjaana Anjaani has a flatness that is unique. The screenplay, co-written by Siddharth and Advaita Kala from a story by Mamata Anand, goes nowhere fast.
Priyanka, a National Award-winning actress goes for the artificial bubbly vibe. Ranbir tries hard to salvage the film, dropping his shirt several times but even his lovingly shot chest can’t save the film.
